🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack at the front center jacking point to raise your Forester.
- Place jack stands under the front side pinch weld support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to make sure it is stable before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Remove the Lower Splash Shield if It Blocks Access
- Use a 12mm socket or trim clip removal tool to remove the lower splash shield fasteners that block access to the rear control arm bolts.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift plastic clips if needed.
- Set the splash shield and clips aside in order.
Step 5: Mark the Original Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark around the rear control arm bushing bracket and bolt positions.
- This helps you install the new arm close to the old position before the alignment.
- Marks help, but alignment is still required.
Step 6: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link from the Control Arm
- Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the stabilizer link nut from the control arm.
- If the link stud spins, hold the stud with the correct wrench while turning the nut with the 17mm wrench.
- Move the stabilizer link out of the control arm.
Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint Pinch Bolt
- Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut from the bottom of the steering knuckle.
- Use a wire brush and penetrating oil if the pinch bolt area is rusty.
- Discard the old pinch bolt and nut if replacing with new hardware.
Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Use a dead blow hammer only on the separator tool if extra force is needed.
- Do not strike the threaded ball joint stud directly.
- Use a pry bar gently under the control arm if the ball joint is stuck.
Step 9: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the front control arm mounting bolt and nut.
- Support the control arm by hand as the bolt comes out.
Step 10: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the rear control arm mounting bolt and nut.
- Use a pry bar gently to help slide the control arm out of the subframe brackets.
- Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
Step 11: Compare the Old and New Control Arms
- Place the old and new control arms side by side on the ground.
- Confirm the ball joint, bushings, stabilizer link mount, and mounting points match.
- Use a wire brush to clean the subframe mounting pockets before installation.
Step 12: Install the New Control Arm into the Subframe
- Position the new control arm into the subframe brackets by hand.
- Install the rear mounting bolt and nut loosely by hand.
- Install the front mounting bolt and nut loosely by hand.
- Do not final-tighten these bolts yet.
- Loose bolts help parts line up.
Step 13: Seat the Ball Joint into the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball joint stud fully into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use a floor jack under the control arm only if slight upward pressure is needed.
- Install the new ball joint pinch bolt and nut using a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench.
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Reconnect the Stabilizer Link
- Insert the stabilizer link stud into the control arm.
- Install the new stabilizer link nut by hand.
- Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to tighten the nut.
- Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the control arm on the other side.
- Keep each side’s hardware organized so bolts go back into the correct positions.
Step 16: Set the Suspension to Normal Ride Height
- Use a floor jack under the outer end of the control arm to raise the suspension until it sits close to normal ride height.
- Normal ride height means the control arm is sitting like it would with the vehicle on the ground.
- Do this before tightening the front and rear bushing bolts.
Step 17: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the front control arm mounting bolt.
- Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).
- Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the rear control arm mounting bolt.
- Torque to 125 Nm (92 ft-lbs).
Step 18: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Position the splash shield back in place.
- Use a 12mm socket, trim clip removal tool, or flathead screwdriver to reinstall the original fasteners and clips.
Step 19: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Lift each wheel into place by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 20: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Forester fully to the ground.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
