🔧 Ranger - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

On your Ranger, the front lower control arms connect the frame to the steering knuckles and hold the lower ball joints. Replacement is needed when the ball joint, bushings, or arm are worn, loose, torn, bent, or causing clunks, tire wear, or poor alignment.

  • ⚠️ This repair supports steering and suspension parts. Do not drive your Ranger until everything is fully tightened and inspected.
  • ⚠️ Always support your Ranger with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ The front suspension is heavy. Keep hands clear when separating the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud threads. Damaged threads can make the joint unsafe.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm pivot bolts must be done at normal ride height to avoid twisting the rubber bushings.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Ranger on a flat, solid surface.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Spray the lower control arm bolts, lower ball joint nut, and stabilizer link nut with penetrating oil.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
  • Plan to have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of Your Ranger

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved front frame jacking area.
  • Lift the front of your Ranger high enough for the tires to clear the ground.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
  • Lower your Ranger gently onto the jack stands.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly touching a safe support point as backup.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm.
  • Raise the jack just enough to lightly support the arm.
  • Do not lift your Ranger off the jack stands.

Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Lower Control Arm

  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 15mm wrench to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the lower control arm.
  • Move the stabilizer link out of the control arm.
  • Inspect the link boot. Replace the link if the boot is torn or the joint is loose.

Step 6: Mark the Control Arm Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark the current position of the lower control arm pivot bolts and washers.
  • These marks help you get close enough to drive safely to the alignment shop.
  • They do not replace a wheel alignment.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin if your replacement-style ball joint nut uses one.
  • Use a 21mm socket, 1/2-inch drive ratchet, and 21mm wrench as needed to loosen and remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • If the stud spins, apply light upward pressure under the lower control arm with the floor jack.

Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator using the correct drive end on the tool until the ball joint pops loose.
  • If needed, tap the side of the steering knuckle boss with a hammer 2-lb while the separator is under pressure.
  • Do not hit the ball joint stud directly.
  • The pop can be loud.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts

  • Use an 18mm socket, 1/2-inch drive ratchet, and 18mm wrench to remove the front and rear lower control arm pivot bolts and nuts.
  • Use a breaker bar 1/2-inch drive if the bolts are tight.
  • Support the arm with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch only if the arm is stuck in the frame pockets.

Step 10: Remove the Old Lower Control Arm

  • Lower the floor jack slightly to release tension from the control arm.
  • Pull the lower control arm out of the frame brackets by hand.
  • Compare the old control arm to the new front lower control arm assembly before installing it.
  • Make sure the ball joint angle and bushing locations match.

Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Place the new front lower control arm assembly into the frame brackets by hand.
  • Install the new pivot bolts and nuts by hand only.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch gently if needed to align the bushing sleeves.
  • Do not fully tighten the pivot bolts yet.

Step 12: Connect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use the floor jack under the control arm to raise the ball joint fully into the knuckle.
  • Install the new front lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link

  • Insert the stabilizer bar link back into the lower control arm.
  • Install the new front stabilizer bar link nut by hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 15mm wrench, and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the nut to Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Control arms should be replaced in pairs when bushings or ball joints are worn unevenly.

Step 15: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Reinstall the wheels temporarily by hand with the lug nuts snug.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Ranger slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Ranger until the full vehicle weight is on the wheels.
  • Bounce the front bumper gently by hand to settle the suspension.

Step 16: Tighten the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts at Ride Height

  • With your Ranger sitting on its wheels, use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts.
  • Tighten each front lower control arm pivot bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • This prevents the rubber bushings from being pre-twisted.

Step 17: Final Wheel Installation

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug all front wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
  • Use a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
  • Drive slowly around the block and check for clunks or wandering.
  • Schedule a professional wheel alignment immediately.
  • After 50-100 miles, recheck the lug nut torque with a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center or your Ranger pulls, do not delay the alignment.
