- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut and control arm mounting bolts.
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the old control arm bolts before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
- Plan to get a professional four-wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Odyssey at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 19mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside.
Step 4: Inspect the Control Arm Area
- Use a shop light to view the lower control arm, ball joint, rear bushing, and front mounting point.
- The bushing is the rubber mount where the control arm bolts to the frame.
- The ball joint is the pivot joint at the outer end of the control arm near the wheel knuckle.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust or dirt from exposed bolt threads.
Step 5: Mark the Original Bolt Positions
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm mounting bolts and washers.
- This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the vehicle drivable afterward.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
- A cotter pin is a small locking pin that prevents the nut from backing off.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use a 17mm wrench or correct-size socket if access allows to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This keeps the control arm from dropping suddenly when the joint separates.
Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator between the control arm and steering knuckle.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely presses the tapered ball joint stud loose from the knuckle.
- Tighten the separator until the joint pops free.
- Use a rubber mallet only for light tapping if needed.
- Remove the loosened castle nut fully after the joint is separated.
Step 9: Support the Control Arm
- Use the floor jack under the outer end of the control arm with light pressure only.
- Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stands.
- This support helps control the arm while removing the mounting bolts.
Step 10: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt.
- Use a 22mm wrench to hold the nut if it spins.
- Remove the bolt and nut once loose.
Step 11: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt.
- Use a 21mm wrench to hold the nut if required.
- Remove the front mounting bolt.
Step 12: Remove the Old Control Arm
- Use a pry bar to gently work the control arm out of the subframe brackets.
- Lower the floor jack slightly if the arm is binding.
- Remove the old control arm from the vehicle.
- Do not force aluminum parts.
Step 13: Compare the Old and New Control Arms
- Place the new control arm beside the old one.
- Confirm the ball joint, bushings, and mounting holes match side-to-side.
- Make sure the left and right control arms are not swapped.
Step 14: Install the New Control Arm into the Subframe
- Position the new control arm into the mounting brackets by hand.
- Use a rubber mallet for light taps if needed.
- Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
- Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.
Step 15: Connect the Lower Ball Joint
- Raise the outer end of the control arm slightly with the floor jack.
- Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut by hand.
- Use a 17mm wrench to snug the nut.
- Torque to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
Step 16: Tighten the Control Arm Bolts at Ride Height
- Use the floor jack under the control arm to raise the suspension until it sits near normal ride height.
- Normal ride height means the control arm is positioned like it would be with the vehicle sitting on the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench on the front mounting bolt.
- Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench on the rear mounting bolt.
- Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 16 on the opposite front control arm.
- Replace control arms in pairs when possible for even suspension feel and alignment.
Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 19: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Odyssey to the ground.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Bounce the front of the vehicle gently and listen for abnormal clunks.
