🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts while your CR-V is on the ground.
- Tip: Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point to raise your CR-V.
- Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the approved front side support points.
- Lower your CR-V slowly onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the front lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Remove the Front Splash Shield If It Blocks Access
- Use the trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips from the front lower splash shield if it blocks the rear control arm bolts.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove any splash shield bolts.
- Set the splash shield and clips aside in order.
Step 5: Support the Steering Knuckle
- The steering knuckle is the large metal part that holds the wheel hub and turns with the steering.
- Place the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) lightly under the steering knuckle or lower control arm.
- Raise it just enough to support the suspension. Do not lift your CR-V off the jack stand.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin
- The ball joint is a pivot joint that lets the wheel move up and down while steering.
- Use the needle nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
- A cotter pin is a small locking pin that prevents the nut from loosening.
Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Castle Nut
- Use the 17mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns to protect the stud while separating the joint.
Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint
- Install the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the separator with the 19mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive until the ball joint pops loose.
- Use the rubber mallet only for light tapping if needed.
- Remove the castle nut fully with the 17mm socket and move the knuckle slightly away from the control arm.
Step 9: Mark the Control Arm Bolt Positions
- Use the paint marker to mark the position of the control arm mounting bolts and brackets.
- This helps keep the suspension close enough to drive safely to the alignment shop.
Step 10: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use the 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt and nut.
- Use the 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the bolt and nut.
Step 11: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use the 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt and nut.
- Use the 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the bolt and nut.
- Hold the control arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
Step 12: Remove the Lower Control Arm
- Use the pry bar 18-inch to gently work the control arm out of the subframe pockets.
- Do not pry against the brake hose, CV axle boot, or ABS wire.
- Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
Step 13: Install the New Lower Control Arm
- Slide the new front lower control arm assembly into the subframe pockets.
- Use the pry bar 18-inch only as needed to align the bushings with the bolt holes.
- Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
- Do not final-torque the bushing bolts yet.
Step 14: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install a new lower ball joint castle nut by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the castle nut to Torque to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until the hole lines up. Do not loosen it to align the hole.
- Install a new cotter pin with the needle nose pliers and bend the ends over securely.
Step 15: Load the Suspension Before Final Torque
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) under the outer end of the lower control arm.
- Raise the control arm until the suspension sits near normal ride height.
- Normal ride height means the control arm is in about the same position it has when the vehicle is sitting on the ground.
Step 16: Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use the 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the front control arm mounting bolt to Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
- Use the 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the rear control arm mounting bolt to Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
- Lower and remove the floor jack from under the control arm.
Step 17: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Position the splash shield back into place.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic clips by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to snug any splash shield bolts.
Step 18: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the opposite front lower control arm.
- Replacing both sides helps your CR-V track and brake evenly.
Step 19: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install both front wheels onto the hubs.
- Start all lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 20: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift your CR-V slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Lower your CR-V fully to the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
- ✅ Look behind each front wheel and confirm the brake hose and ABS wire are not stretched or pinched.
