🔧 HR-V - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower control arms on your HR-V. The lower control arm holds the wheel knuckle in position and uses rubber bushings plus a ball joint to keep the suspension aligned and quiet.

  • ⚠️ Support your HR-V with jack stands before working underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Replace control arms in pairs when possible so left and right suspension behavior stays even.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud or threads.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm bushing bolts must be done at normal ride height to prevent premature bushing failure.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after replacing control arms.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your HR-V on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut and control arm mounting bolts.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
  • A cotter pin is a small bent metal safety pin that prevents a castle nut from backing off.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheels

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose while grounded.

Step 2: Lift and Support the HR-V

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your HR-V at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as a light backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark around the control arm bushing mounts before removing bolts.
  • This helps you place the new arm close to the original position before alignment.
  • Alignment is still required afterward.

Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link if Needed

  • If the stabilizer link blocks control arm movement, use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the lower stabilizer link nut from the control arm.
  • Move the stabilizer link aside by hand.
  • Torque on installation: 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.

Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns while separating the joint.
  • This keeps the control arm from dropping suddenly.

Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator until the joint pops loose.
  • Remove the castle nut fully using the 17mm socket.
  • Support the knuckle by hand so it does not pull on the brake hose.

Step 9: Remove the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, and matching 17mm wrench or 19mm wrench as needed to remove the front and rear control arm mounting bolts.
  • Use a flat pry bar to gently help the arm out of the subframe pockets.
  • Remove the control arm from the vehicle.

Step 10: Compare the Old and New Control Arms

  • Place the old and new control arms side by side.
  • Confirm the ball joint direction, bushing positions, and mounting points match.
  • Use safety glasses and inspect for shipping damage before installation.

Step 11: Install the New Control Arm

  • Slide the new control arm into the subframe mounting pockets by hand.
  • Use a rubber mallet only if light tapping is needed.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.
  • Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.

Step 12: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new castle nut and tighten with a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs)
  • Continue tightening only enough to align the castle nut slot with the cotter pin hole.
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends over securely.

Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Link

  • If removed, install the stabilizer link back into the control arm.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to tighten the nut.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack under the outer end of the control arm to raise it until the suspension is near normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the control arm is sitting close to its usual position when the vehicle is on the ground.
  • This prevents twisting the rubber bushings at rest.

Step 15: Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, and torque wrench to tighten the control arm mounting bolts.
  • Front control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 93 Nm (69 ft-lbs)
  • Rear control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 93 Nm (69 ft-lbs)
  • Lower the floor jack from under the control arm after tightening.

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite front control arm.
  • Use the same tools and torque specs.
  • Replacing both sides helps the suspension feel even and predictable.

Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Place the wheels back on the hubs.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your HR-V fully to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for clunks or binding.
  • ✅ Road test slowly at first. Listen for knocking, popping, or pulling.
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, avoid highway driving until alignment is completed.
