📋 Before You Begin
- Park your HR-V on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut and control arm mounting bolts.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
- A cotter pin is a small bent metal safety pin that prevents a castle nut from backing off.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheels
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Break them loose while grounded.
Step 2: Lift and Support the HR-V
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your HR-V at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as a light backup support.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark around the control arm bushing mounts before removing bolts.
- This helps you place the new arm close to the original position before alignment.
- Alignment is still required afterward.
Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link if Needed
- If the stabilizer link blocks control arm movement, use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the lower stabilizer link nut from the control arm.
- Move the stabilizer link aside by hand.
- Torque on installation: 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)
Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns while separating the joint.
- This keeps the control arm from dropping suddenly.
Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the separator until the joint pops loose.
- Remove the castle nut fully using the 17mm socket.
- Support the knuckle by hand so it does not pull on the brake hose.
Step 9: Remove the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, and matching 17mm wrench or 19mm wrench as needed to remove the front and rear control arm mounting bolts.
- Use a flat pry bar to gently help the arm out of the subframe pockets.
- Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
Step 10: Compare the Old and New Control Arms
- Place the old and new control arms side by side.
- Confirm the ball joint direction, bushing positions, and mounting points match.
- Use safety glasses and inspect for shipping damage before installation.
Step 11: Install the New Control Arm
- Slide the new control arm into the subframe mounting pockets by hand.
- Use a rubber mallet only if light tapping is needed.
- Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
- Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.
- Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.
Step 12: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut and tighten with a 17mm socket.
- Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs)
- Continue tightening only enough to align the castle nut slot with the cotter pin hole.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends over securely.
Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Link
- If removed, install the stabilizer link back into the control arm.
- Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to tighten the nut.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)
Step 14: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use the floor jack under the outer end of the control arm to raise it until the suspension is near normal ride height.
- Normal ride height means the control arm is sitting close to its usual position when the vehicle is on the ground.
- This prevents twisting the rubber bushings at rest.
Step 15: Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, and torque wrench to tighten the control arm mounting bolts.
- Front control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 93 Nm (69 ft-lbs)
- Rear control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 93 Nm (69 ft-lbs)
- Lower the floor jack from under the control arm after tightening.
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat the same steps on the opposite front control arm.
- Use the same tools and torque specs.
- Replacing both sides helps the suspension feel even and predictable.
Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place the wheels back on the hubs.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your HR-V fully to the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for clunks or binding.
- ✅ Road test slowly at first. Listen for knocking, popping, or pulling.
- ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
