🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove them yet.
- Break them loose before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center lifting point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
- Lower your Tucson gently onto the jack stands.
- Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This helps catch the joint when it pops loose.
Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Use a ball joint separator to press the ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pushes the tapered stud out of the knuckle.
- If using a pickle fork ball joint separator, place it between the control arm and knuckle, then tap it with a rubber mallet.
- Once the joint pops loose, use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the ball joint nut fully.
Step 9: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 21mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt.
- Hold the nut with a 21mm combination wrench if it turns.
- Remove the bolt and nut, then set them aside if reusing temporarily.
Step 10: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt
- Use a 19mm socket or 22mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt.
- Hold the opposite side with a 19mm combination wrench or 21mm combination wrench if needed.
- Remove the bolt fully.
Step 11: Remove the Old Control Arm
- Use a small pry bar to gently work the control arm out of the subframe pockets.
- Lower the outer end of the control arm away from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the control arm from your Tucson.
- Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS sensor wire.
Step 12: Compare the New Control Arm
- Place the old and new control arms side by side.
- Make sure the ball joint, bushings, bolt holes, and shape match.
- Confirm left and right control arms are not swapped.
Step 13: Install the New Control Arm Into the Subframe
- Slide the new control arm into the front and rear subframe pockets.
- Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand only.
- Use a small pry bar gently if the bushings need help lining up.
- Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.
Step 14: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new ball joint nut by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs) to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin through the ball joint stud using needle-nose pliers.
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
Step 15: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use the floor jack under the outer control arm area to raise the suspension to normal ride height.
- Ride height means the suspension sits about where it would with the vehicle on the ground.
- This prevents the new rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.
Step 16: Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a torque wrench (20-250 ft-lbs), 21mm socket, and matching 21mm combination wrench for the rear mounting bolt.
- Tighten the rear control arm mounting bolt to Torque to 156 Nm (115 ft-lbs).
- Use a torque wrench (20-250 ft-lbs), 19mm socket or 22mm socket, and matching wrench for the front mounting bolt.
- Tighten the front control arm mounting bolt to Torque to 156 Nm (115 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same steps and tools to replace the other front lower control arm.
- Replacing both sides helps your Tucson handle evenly.
Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 19: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
Step 20: Torque the Wheel Lug Nuts
