  • ⚠️ Support your Canyon with jack stands before working underneath it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ The front coil spring and suspension can store energy. Do not remove spring-related parts unless the lower control arm is safely supported.
  • ⚠️ After control arm replacement, your Canyon needs a professional wheel alignment.
  • ⚠️ Do not fully tighten control arm pivot bolts while the suspension is hanging. Final tightening must be done at normal ride height to prevent premature bushing failure.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Canyon on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the original position of the lower control arm mounting bolts. This helps get the alignment close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • 🧰 A ball joint separator is a tool that separates the tapered ball joint stud from the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
  • 🔩 Penetrating oil helps loosen rusted bolts. Spray the control arm bolts, sway bar link nuts, and lower ball joint nut before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack under the front frame crossmember to lift your Canyon.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails on both sides.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby to support the lower control arm later.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them aside flat.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm, close to the ball joint.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stands.
  • This prevents the suspension from dropping suddenly when the ball joint is separated.

Step 5: Disconnect the Sway Bar Link from the Lower Control Arm

  • Use an 18mm wrench and 18mm socket to remove the sway bar link nut from the lower control arm.
  • If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct wrench while turning the nut with the 18mm socket.
  • Push the sway bar link out of the lower control arm.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen and remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • If there is a cotter pin, use needle nose pliers to remove it first.
  • Thread the nut back on a few turns by hand to protect the threads while separating the joint.

Step 7: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use a ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten or strike the separator as designed until the taper pops loose.
  • Use a dead blow hammer only on the separator tool, not on the threaded ball joint stud.
  • Remove the ball joint nut completely with the 21mm socket.
  • The pop sound is normal.

Step 8: Mark the Control Arm Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm mounting cams or washers.
  • Mark both the front and rear lower control arm mounting points.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the steering close for a short drive.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 21mm socket, 22mm socket, 21mm wrench, or 22mm wrench as needed to remove the lower control arm pivot bolts and nuts.
  • Use a breaker bar if the bolts are tight.
  • Support the control arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Use a pry bar to gently work the control arm out of the frame brackets.

Step 10: Compare the Old and New Control Arm

  • Place the old and new lower control arms side by side.
  • Confirm the bushing shape, ball joint position, and mounting points match.
  • Use shop towels to clean dirt from the frame mounting pockets.

Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Lift the new lower control arm into the frame brackets by hand.
  • Use a pry bar gently if the bushing sleeves need help lining up.
  • Install the pivot bolts and nuts by hand first.
  • Do not fully tighten the pivot bolts yet.

Step 12: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs) plus 90 degrees.
  • If the replacement nut uses a cotter pin, use needle nose pliers to install a new cotter pin after tightening.

Step 13: Reconnect the Sway Bar Link

  • Insert the sway bar link stud into the lower control arm.
  • Install the new nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the sway bar link nut to Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the opposite side using the same tools.
  • Replace both sides before final tightening so the suspension sits evenly.

Step 15: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Reinstall the front wheels temporarily using the 22mm socket.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Canyon slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it onto the ground.
  • Roll the truck forward and backward a few feet to settle the suspension.
  • This puts the bushings in their normal resting position before final tightening.

Step 16: Final-Tighten the Lower Control Arm Bolts

  • With your Canyon sitting at normal ride height, use a 21mm socket, 22mm socket, 21mm wrench, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts.
  • Tighten the lower control arm pivot fasteners to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Keep the paint marks close to their original positions until the alignment is performed.

Step 17: Final-Torque the Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
  • Star pattern keeps wheels seated evenly.

  • ✅ Bounce the front of your Canyon a few times and listen for clunks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Check steering feel, braking, and any unusual noises.
  • ✅ Schedule a professional front wheel alignment immediately after this repair.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 22mm socket and torque wrench.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, the truck pulls, or tires squeal, avoid highway driving until alignment is completed.
