📋 Before You Begin
- Park your F-150 on a flat, solid surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut, control arm pivot bolts, and sway bar end link nuts.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely separates the tapered ball joint stud from the steering knuckle without using unsafe prying force.
- The steering knuckle is the large metal part that the wheel hub and brake rotor attach to.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Break them loose on the ground.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack under the front frame crossmember to lift the front of your F-150.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails on both sides.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly to confirm it is stable before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them aside flat.
Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Cam Bolt Positions
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the front and rear lower control arm cam bolts.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut

- Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen and remove the lower ball joint nut.
- If the nut is very tight, apply penetrating oil and work slowly.
Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
- Use a 24mm socket or the tool’s required drive size to tighten the separator until the ball joint pops free.
- Use a hammer only to lightly tap the knuckle area if needed; do not hit the ball joint threads.
- Lower the floor jack slowly to let the lower control arm move down.
- Expect a loud pop when it releases.
Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts
- Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to remove the front lower control arm pivot bolt and nut.
- Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to remove the rear lower control arm pivot bolt and nut.
- Keep track of the cam washers and their orientation.
- If a bolt is stuck, use penetrating oil, a breaker bar, and slow steady force.
Step 10: Remove the Lower Control Arm
- Use a flat pry bar to gently work the lower control arm out of the frame pockets.
- Remove the control arm from the truck.
- Compare the old and new control arms to make sure the shape, ball joint location, and bushing locations match.
Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm
- Position the new lower control arm into the frame pockets by hand.
- Use the flat pry bar only if needed to align the bushings.
- Install the front and rear pivot bolts with the cam washers in their original marked positions.
- Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to snug the pivot nuts, but do not fully tighten yet.
Step 12: Connect the Lower Ball Joint
- Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the new ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).
- If your new ball joint uses a cotter pin, use needle-nose pliers to install a new cotter pin after torqueing.
Step 13: Reconnect the Sway Bar End Link
- Place the sway bar end link back through the lower control arm.
- Install the new end link nut by hand.
- Use an 18mm wrench and 18mm socket to tighten the sway bar end link nut to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the opposite front lower control arm.
- Use the same tools and keep the cam washer positions matched to your paint marks.
- Doing both sides prevents uneven handling.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Lift each wheel into place by hand.
- Install the lug nuts finger-tight.
- Use a 21mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Set the Suspension at Normal Ride Height
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your F-150 until the front tires are on ramps or sturdy blocks, or use the floor jack under the lower control arm to simulate normal ride height before final tightening.
- Normal ride height means the suspension is carrying the truck’s weight like it does on the road.
Step 17: Final-Tighten the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts
- With the suspension at normal ride height, line up the cam washers with your paint marks.
- Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten each lower control arm pivot nut to Torque to 350 Nm (258 ft-lbs).
- This step is important because tightening the bushings while the suspension hangs can twist and ruin the new bushings.
Step 18: Torque the Wheel Lug Nuts
- Lower the truck fully onto the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Look under the front suspension and confirm all nuts, bolts, washers, and cotter pins are installed correctly.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and make sure nothing binds or rubs.
- ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for clunks and check that the steering wheel is centered.
- ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible. Do not skip this.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
