This repair replaces the front lower control arms on your F-150. The lower control arm holds the lower ball joint, supports the wheel hub area, and keeps the front suspension aligned. Worn bushings or ball joints can cause clunks, uneven tire wear, loose steering, or poor alignment.

Assumption: This guide covers front lower control arm replacement on your 4WD F-150. Replace both sides as a pair when wear is similar.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ The lower control arm supports suspension load. Keep it supported with a floor jack before removing bolts.
  • ⚠️ Never work under your F-150 supported only by a floor jack. Always use jack stands under the frame.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the aluminum steering knuckle. It can crack.
  • ⚠️ A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the knuckle.
  • ⚠️ Mark cam bolt positions before removal. Cam bolts are alignment bolts with offset washers.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after this repair.
  • ⚠️ Do not fully tighten control arm pivot bolts while the suspension is hanging. Final tightening must be done at ride height to prevent bushing damage.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level, solid ground.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower control arm cam bolts, lower strut nuts, sway bar end link nuts, and lower ball joint nuts.
  • Take photos of the control arm bolts and washer positions before disassembly.
  • No infotainment or battery disconnect procedure is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front crossmember or approved front frame lift point.
  • Raise the front of your F-150 until both front wheels clear the ground.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) available for supporting the lower control arm.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm near the lower ball joint.
  • Raise the jack until it lightly supports the arm.
  • The lower ball joint is the pivot joint at the outer end of the control arm below the wheel hub.

Step 5: Remove Brake Hose and ABS Wire Retainers

  • Use a 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool to remove any brake hose or ABS wire brackets attached to the control arm area.
  • Move the hose and wire aside gently.
  • Do not pull, stretch, or kink the brake hose.

Step 6: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link

  • Use a 15mm socket and 15mm wrench to remove the sway bar end link nut from the lower control arm.
  • Move the end link away from the control arm by hand.
  • The sway bar end link is the short vertical link that connects the sway bar to the suspension.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Strut Mounting Nuts

  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the two lower strut mounting nuts.
  • Remove the nuts using an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet.
  • Leave the strut assembly installed at the top.

Step 8: Mark the Alignment Cam Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to draw lines across each lower control arm cam washer and frame bracket.
  • Mark both the front and rear pivot bolts.
  • This helps you drive safely to the alignment shop, but it does not replace alignment.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use needle nose pliers to remove the cotter pin if equipped.
  • Use a 24mm socket or 27mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
  • Back the nut off until it is nearly flush with the end of the ball joint stud.
  • Leaving the nut partly installed helps control the release when the joint pops loose.

Step 10: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator using the required socket from its kit, usually a 24mm socket or 27mm socket.
  • When the joint pops loose, remove the separator.
  • Remove the lower ball joint nut fully using the 24mm socket or 27mm socket.
  • Do not strike the aluminum knuckle with a steel hammer.

Step 11: Remove the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts

  • Use a 27mm socket or 30mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front and rear lower control arm pivot bolts.
  • Use the matching 27mm wrench or 30mm wrench to hold the nut side if it turns.
  • Remove the cam bolts, nuts, and washers.
  • Keep note of washer direction and bolt direction.

Step 12: Remove the Lower Control Arm

  • Lower the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) slowly until the arm is relaxed.
  • Use a pry bar 24-inch to gently work the lower control arm out of the frame brackets.
  • Remove the control arm through the wheel opening.

Step 13: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Position the new lower control arm into the frame brackets by hand.
  • Install the cam bolts, washers, and nuts in the same direction as removed.
  • Use your paint marker marks to place the cam washers close to their original positions.
  • Use a 27mm socket or 30mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the pivot nuts only.
  • Do not fully torque the pivot bolts yet.

Step 14: Connect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the lower control arm until the lower ball joint stud goes into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 24mm socket or 27mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 184 Nm (136 ft-lbs).
  • If the replacement control arm uses a cotter pin, use needle nose pliers to install a new cotter pin after torquing.

Step 15: Reinstall the Lower Strut Mounting Nuts

  • Guide the lower strut studs through the new lower control arm.
  • Install the new lower strut nuts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower strut nuts to Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reconnect the Sway Bar End Link

  • Install the sway bar end link into the lower control arm by hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 15mm wrench to tighten the end link nut to Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Reattach Brake Hose and ABS Wire Retainers

  • Use a 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool to reinstall all hose and wire retainers.
  • Make sure the ABS wire and brake hose are routed exactly as before.

Step 18: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 17 on the opposite side if replacing both lower control arms.
  • Use the same tools and torque specs.

Step 19: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Thread each lug nut by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 20: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift your F-150 slightly and remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower the truck until the wheels are on the ground and the suspension is carrying the vehicle weight.
  • Roll the truck forward and backward about 3 feet to settle the suspension.
  • This is ride height, meaning the suspension is sitting normally under the truck’s weight.

Step 21: Torque the Lower Control Arm Pivot Bolts at Ride Height

  • Use a 27mm socket or 30mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
  • Hold the nut side with a matching 27mm wrench or 30mm wrench if needed.
  • Tighten each lower control arm pivot bolt to Torque to 350 Nm (258 ft-lbs).
  • Use care. This is a very high torque value and requires a strong torque wrench.

Step 22: Torque the Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Look over both sides and confirm all bolts, nuts, retainers, brake hoses, and ABS wires are secure.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Check that nothing rubs or stretches.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for clunks, pops, or steering pull.
  • ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment immediately after replacement.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
