📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Corolla on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the control arm mounting bolts and ball joint fasteners. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use a paint marker to mark bolt positions before removal. This helps get the alignment close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Corolla at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the front support area as backup, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the front and rear control arm mounting bolts.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the steering close for the drive to the shop.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Fasteners

  • The ball joint is the pivot joint at the outer end of the control arm that lets the steering knuckle move up, down, and turn.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the ball joint-to-control arm bolts and nut.
  • If the fasteners are tight, use a 17mm combination wrench to hold the nut while turning the bolt.
  • Support the steering knuckle by hand so it does not pull on the brake hose.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Control Arm

  • Use a ball joint separator tool (specialty) to separate the lower ball joint from the control arm if it is stuck.
  • A ball joint separator is a wedge-style tool that safely breaks the tapered joint loose without hammering directly on suspension parts.
  • Use a dead blow hammer lightly on the separator tool if needed.
  • Do not strike the brake rotor, axle, or rubber ball joint boot.

Step 7: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt.
  • Use a 19mm combination wrench if the nut needs to be held from the opposite side.
  • Remove the front mounting bolt and set it aside only if reusing temporarily.

Step 8: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt.
  • Use a 19mm combination wrench as needed to hold the nut.
  • Remove the rear bolt while supporting the control arm with your free hand.

Step 9: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently work the old control arm out of its mounting pockets.
  • Do not pry against brake lines, the CV axle boot, or the steering rack boot.
  • Compare the old and new control arms before installation. The shape, bushing positions, and ball joint mounting area must match.

Step 10: Install the New Control Arm Loosely

  • Slide the new control arm into the mounting pockets by hand.
  • Use the pry bar 18-inch only for small adjustments if the bushings are tight.
  • Install the front and rear control arm bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts, but do not fully tighten yet.
  • Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.

Step 11: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Control Arm

  • Guide the lower ball joint into position at the outer end of the new control arm.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the ball joint bolts and nut by hand first.
  • Tighten the ball joint-to-control arm fasteners evenly.
  • Torque to 89 Nm (66 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Preloading means tightening the rubber bushing bolts with the suspension sitting near normal ride height. This prevents twisting and early bushing failure.
  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the outer control arm area to gently raise the suspension until the control arm is close to its normal driving angle.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand while doing this.

Step 13: Final-Torque the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 19mm combination wrench, and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the control arm mounting bolts.
  • Front control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
  • Rear control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat the same process on the other side if replacing both control arms.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Place the wheels back onto the hubs by hand.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Corolla slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of the vehicle gently and listen for clunks.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and check that nothing binds or rubs.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for knocks, pulling, or steering wheel off-center.
  • ✅ Get a professional four-wheel alignment as soon as possible after replacing the control arms.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If the ABS, traction control, or steering warning lights come on, stop driving and inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring near the repaired area.
