📋 Before You Begin

• 🚗 Park your Tiguan on level ground with the parking brake set.
• 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• 📏 Measure from the center of the front wheel hub to the lower edge of the fender before lifting. This is your normal ride-height reference.
• 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the current control arm bolt positions. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to the alignment shop.
• 💧 Spray penetrating oil on the control arm bolts and ball joint fasteners.
• 💡 A bushing is the rubber mount inside the control arm that absorbs bumps and road vibration.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Bolts

• Use a 17mm lug bolt socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front wheel lug bolt about one turn.
• Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
• Loosen only, do not remove.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

• Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Tiguan at the front jacking point.
• Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved side support points.
• Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

• Use a 17mm lug bolt socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the lug bolts.
• Remove both front wheels and set them flat aside.

Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position

• Use a paint marker to mark around the front and rear control arm mounting areas.
• Use a measuring tape to record the control arm position if you see slotted holes or visible alignment marks.
• This is only a temporary reference. Your Tiguan still needs an alignment afterward.

Step 5: Disconnect the Outer Ball Joint

• Use a 16mm socket and 16mm wrench to remove the ball joint nut at the outside end of the control arm.
• The ball joint is the pivot that lets the wheel turn and move up and down.
• If the joint is stuck, use a ball joint separator (specialty) to release it from the steering knuckle.
• Use a rubber mallet only for light tapping. Do not damage the ball joint threads.
• Install torque later: 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

• Use an 18mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt.
• If the nut turns with the bolt, hold it with an 18mm wrench.
• Remove the bolt and note which direction it came out.

Step 7: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

• Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt if it uses a hex-head bolt.
• If the bolt has a star-shaped internal drive, use a Triple-square M12 socket with the breaker bar 1/2-inch drive.
• Remove the bolt while supporting the control arm by hand.

Step 8: Remove the Old Control Arm

• Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently work the control arm out of the subframe pockets.
• Do not pry against the brake hose, CV axle boot, or wiring.
• Remove the old control arm from your Tiguan.
• Take a photo before removing parts.

Step 9: Install the New Control Arm

• Place the new front lower control arm into the same position as the old one.
• Use a pry bar 18-inch only as needed to align the bushing sleeves with the mounting holes.
• Install the new front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
• Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.

Step 10: Reconnect the Ball Joint

• Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
• Install the new front ball joint nut.
• Use a 16mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the ball joint nut to Torque to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

• Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the outer control arm area to raise the suspension slowly.
• Use the measuring tape to match the hub-center-to-fender measurement you recorded earlier.
• This puts the new bushings in their normal resting position.

Step 12: Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

• Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, torque wrench 1/2-inch drive, and torque angle gauge (specialty) to tighten the rear control arm bolt to Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs) plus 90 degrees.
• Use a 21mm socket or Triple-square M12 socket, 21mm wrench, torque wrench 1/2-inch drive, and torque angle gauge (specialty) to tighten the front control arm bolt to Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs) plus 90 degrees.
• A torque angle gauge measures the extra turn after the torque wrench clicks.
• Ride height tightening protects bushings.

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Side

• Use the same tools and steps to replace the opposite front lower control arm.
• Left and right control arms are different shapes, so compare before installing.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

• Place each wheel onto the hub by hand.
• Thread the lug bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 17mm lug bolt socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug bolts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Wheels

• Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and lower your Tiguan until the tires touch the ground.
• Use a 17mm lug bolt socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug bolts in a star pattern to Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

• ✅ Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks, rubbing, or popping noises.
• ✅ Check that the steering wheel returns smoothly after turning.
• ✅ Recheck lug bolt torque after a short drive using a 17mm lug bolt socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
• ✅ Get a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
• ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls strongly, avoid highway driving until aligned.
