Suspension bushings are rubber isolators that let the control arms move while keeping the wheels aligned. On your Mustang, the front lower control arm bushings are press-fit into the arm, so the beginner-friendly repair is usually replacing the complete lower control arm assembly instead of pressing bushings in and out.

Assumption: This guide covers front lower control arm bushing replacement by replacing the complete front lower control arm assembly.

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface only. Never work under your Mustang supported by a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands under the proper front support points before removing wheels or suspension parts.
  • ⚠️ Suspension parts can shift when bolts are removed. Keep your hands clear of pinch points.
  • ⚠️ Do not loosen the strut-to-knuckle bolts unless needed. That can change alignment more severely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts one turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loose first, lift second.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Car

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Mustang at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the correct front support points.
  • Gently lower the car onto the jack stands and lightly shake the body to confirm it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum nearby, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the car as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect and Mark the Control Arm Mounts

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the front lower control arm mounting bolts and brackets.
  • Use safety glasses and spray penetrating oil on the control arm mounting bolts, ball joint nut, and stabilizer link nut.
  • Let the penetrating oil soak for several minutes.

Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Control Arm

  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the control arm.
  • If the link stud spins, hold the stud with the appropriate wrench while removing the nut with the 18mm socket.
  • Move the stabilizer bar link aside by hand.

Step 6: Remove Any Splash Shield Clips Blocking Access

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips blocking the control arm bolts.
  • Use needle-nose pliers if a clip is stuck.
  • Set clips aside in a small container so they do not get lost.

Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower ball joint nut at the steering knuckle.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This keeps the joint from popping apart suddenly.
  • A steering knuckle is the heavy metal part that the wheel hub and brake assembly attach to.

Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator tool slowly with the correct wrench or socket supplied with the tool.
  • When the taper releases, remove the ball joint nut fully using the 24mm socket.
  • Support the knuckle by hand so it does not pull on the brake hose.
  • Do not hammer the threads.

Step 9: Remove the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use an 18mm socket, 24mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 24mm wrench as needed to remove the front lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar for tight bolts.
  • Support the control arm with one hand as the last bolt is removed.

Step 10: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently work the old control arm out of the subframe pockets.
  • Use a rubber mallet only on the control arm if it is stuck.
  • Do not pry against brake lines, wiring, or the aluminum steering knuckle.

Step 11: Install the New Control Arm

  • Position the new front lower control arm assembly into the subframe pockets by hand.
  • Install the new mounting bolts and nuts loosely using an 18mm socket, 24mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 24mm wrench.
  • Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.
  • Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.

Step 12: Tighten the Ball Joint Nut

  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link

  • Slide the stabilizer bar link back into the control arm.
  • Install the new stabilizer bar link nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the stabilizer bar link nut to Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the outer end of the control arm.
  • Raise the control arm carefully until it is close to normal ride height.
  • This prevents the rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.

Step 15: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • With the suspension loaded, use an 18mm socket, 24mm socket, 18mm wrench, 24mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the control arm mounting fasteners.
  • Tighten the main front lower control arm mounting bolts to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Tighten the rear lower control arm mounting bolts to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • If your replacement hardware includes torque-angle instructions, follow the hardware instructions supplied with the parts.

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Use the same tools and torque values.
  • Replacing both sides keeps handling even and predictable.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Reinstall both front wheels by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the car slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands, and lower the car to the ground.

Step 18: Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Tighten each lug nut to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
  • Recheck after first short drive.

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or rubbing.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Avoid hard braking, potholes, and aggressive cornering.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the car pulls, stop driving except to reach an alignment shop.
  • ✅ Schedule a professional front wheel alignment immediately after replacing the control arms.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
