- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
- A ball joint press kit is a large C-clamp-style tool used to press the old joint out and the new joint in.
- A snap ring is a spring steel retaining ring that locks the ball joint into the steering knuckle.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do this while the tire is still touching the ground so the wheel does not spin.
- Break nuts loose before lifting.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack at the front center jacking point to raise your Odyssey.
- Place jack stands under the proper front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as a backup support, but do not rely on it alone.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the rocker area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Clean and Inspect the Ball Joint Area
- Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the lower ball joint, castle nut, cotter pin, and snap ring area.
- Spray the ball joint nut and snap ring area with penetrating oil.
- Use safety glasses because rust and dirt can fall while you work.
Step 5: Remove the Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten the cotter pin ends at the ball joint castle nut.
- Pull the cotter pin out with the needle-nose pliers.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Always install a new one.
Step 6: Loosen the Ball Joint Castle Nut
- Use a 17mm socket or 17mm wrench to loosen the ball joint castle nut.
- Do not fully remove it yet. Leave it threaded on a few turns to catch the joint when it pops loose.
- Leaving the nut on prevents sudden drop.
Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Control Arm
- Position the ball joint separator between the lower control arm and the ball joint stud area.
- Tighten the separator with the correct socket from your kit, usually a 19mm socket or 22mm socket, until the taper pops loose.
- If needed, tap the separator body lightly with a hammer to help release tension.
- Remove the castle nut fully with the 17mm socket.
Step 8: Move the Lower Control Arm Down
- Use a pry bar to carefully push the lower control arm downward.
- Pull the steering knuckle outward just enough to clear the ball joint stud from the lower control arm.
- Do not stretch the brake hose or ABS wheel speed sensor wiring.
Step 9: Remove the Ball Joint Snap Ring
- Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the top side of the ball joint at the steering knuckle.
- If the ring is rusty, use penetrating oil and clean the groove with a wire brush.
- Discard the old snap ring.
Step 10: Press Out the Old Ball Joint
- Set up the ball joint press kit with the correct Honda-size ball joint press adapters.
- Position the receiving cup under the ball joint so the old joint can press downward out of the steering knuckle.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to tighten the press screw slowly.
- Press the old ball joint fully out of the steering knuckle.
- If the joint is stuck, release pressure, add penetrating oil, and make sure the adapters are straight.
Step 11: Clean the Ball Joint Bore
- Use brake cleaner and shop rags to clean the ball joint bore in the steering knuckle.
- Use a wire brush to clean the snap ring groove.
- Do not grind or enlarge the bore.
Step 12: Press In the New Ball Joint
- Position the new front lower ball joint squarely in the steering knuckle.
- Set up the ball joint press kit so force is applied only to the outer shell of the new joint, not the stud or boot.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to tighten the press screw slowly.
- Press the ball joint in until it seats fully against the steering knuckle shoulder.
- Go slowly and keep it straight.
Step 13: Install the New Snap Ring
- Use snap ring pliers to install the new snap ring into the groove.
- Confirm the snap ring is fully seated all the way around.
- Use a brass punch and hammer only for light seating taps if needed.
Step 14: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Lower Control Arm
- Use a pry bar to lower the control arm carefully.
- Guide the new ball joint stud into the lower control arm hole.
- Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
Step 15: Tighten the Ball Joint Castle Nut
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the castle nut.
- Torque to 59 Nm (43 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough more to align the castle nut slot with the cotter pin hole.
- Do not loosen the nut to line up the cotter pin hole.
Step 16: Install the New Cotter Pin
- Insert the new cotter pin through the ball joint stud hole.
- Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the castle nut.
- Make sure the cotter pin cannot contact the wheel or brake parts.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheel
- Lift the wheel onto the hub and install the lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheel
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Odyssey until the tire just touches the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat the same steps for the opposite front lower ball joint.
- Use the same tools and torque specs.
- Replacing both sides keeps steering and suspension behavior even.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or binding.
- Check that both cotter pins are installed and both snap rings are fully seated.
- Test drive slowly first. Listen for suspension noise over small bumps.
- Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
- Schedule a front wheel alignment after the repair.
