🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for safety.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point to raise your CR-V.
- Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 19mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Work Area
- Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Look at the lower control arm where it connects to the steering knuckle and subframe.
- Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and lower control arm mounting bolts.
- Let the oil soak for several minutes.
Step 5: Mark the Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark the current position of the lower control arm mounting points.
- This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the suspension close enough to drive carefully to the alignment shop.
Step 6: Remove the Ball Joint Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
- If the cotter pin breaks, remove all remaining pieces before loosening the nut.
Step 7: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use a 17mm socket or 17mm wrench to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This catches the joint when it pops loose.
- Do not remove the nut fully yet.
Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
- Use the correct tool drive or wrench supplied with the separator to tighten it until the taper pops free.
- If needed, tap the steering knuckle near the ball joint boss with a rubber mallet.
- Remove the ball joint nut after the joint is free.
Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Hardware
- Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, 17mm wrench, or 19mm wrench as needed to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Use a 14mm socket or 10mm socket if any splash shield or bracket fasteners block bolt access.
- Support the arm by hand as the last bolt comes out.
Step 10: Remove the Lower Control Arm
- Use a pry bar set to gently work the lower control arm out of the subframe pockets.
- Do not pry against brake hoses, ABS wiring, or aluminum suspension surfaces.
- Compare the old and new control arms before installation.
Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm
- Slide the new lower control arm into the subframe mounting pockets by hand.
- Install the mounting bolts and nuts loosely using a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, 17mm wrench, or 19mm wrench.
- Do not fully tighten the inner control arm bolts while the suspension is hanging.
- Rubber bushings must be tightened at ride height.
Step 12: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the new ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut using a 17mm socket or 17mm wrench.
- Torque to 49-59 Nm (36-44 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends securely around the nut.
Step 13: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use the floor jack under the outer lower control arm area to raise the suspension until it sits near normal ride height.
- Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
- This prevents twisting and early failure of the new control arm bushings.
Step 14: Tighten the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench with the correct 17mm socket or 19mm socket to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts.
- Torque to 93-108 Nm (69-80 ft-lbs) unless the replacement hardware instructions specify otherwise.
- If removed, reinstall any splash shield or bracket fasteners with the 10mm socket or 14mm socket.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel
- Put the wheel back on the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts finger-tight.
- Use the 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise your CR-V slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
