🔧 Civic - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower ball joint, which connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm and lets the suspension move while you steer. On your Civic, the lower ball joint is serviceable, but it is pressed into the steering knuckle, so a ball joint press is required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Civic on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔩 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 📌 A ball joint press is a C-clamp-style tool used to push the ball joint out of, and into, the steering knuckle.
  • 📌 A cotter pin is a small bent safety pin that keeps the castle nut from loosening.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break lug nuts loose on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as a backup safety measure.

Step 4: Free the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the brake hose and ABS wheel speed sensor wire brackets from the strut or knuckle as equipped.
  • Move the hose and wire aside carefully without stretching them.
  • Use a bungee cord if needed to hold them safely away from the work area.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers and side cutters to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • If the cotter pin is rusty, cut it with side cutters and pull the pieces out with needle-nose pliers.

Step 6: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Castle Nut

  • Use a 17mm wrench, 19mm wrench, or matching socket size to loosen the castle nut on the lower ball joint.
  • Back the nut off several turns, but leave it threaded on the stud. This keeps parts from jumping apart when the taper releases.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Lower Control Arm

  • Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator with the correct socket from the kit until the ball joint taper pops loose.
  • Use a dead blow hammer only on the separator if needed.
  • Remove the castle nut completely using the same wrench or socket.
  • The pop sound is normal.

Step 8: Move the Lower Control Arm Down

  • Use a dead blow hammer to gently tap the lower control arm downward if needed.
  • Move the steering knuckle outward enough to access the ball joint snap ring.
  • Do not pull hard on the brake hose or ABS wire.

Step 9: Remove the Ball Joint Snap Ring

  • Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the snap ring area.
  • Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the top or underside of the ball joint, depending on its installed position.
  • A snap ring is a spring steel retaining clip that locks the ball joint in the knuckle.

Step 10: Press Out the Old Ball Joint

  • Set up the ball joint press kit with the correct receiver cup and press adapter.
  • Use the ball joint press kit to press the old ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
  • Keep the press straight. If it tilts, stop and realign it before continuing.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to turn the press screw.

Step 11: Clean the Ball Joint Bore

  • Use a wire brush to clean the ball joint opening in the steering knuckle.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver carefully to remove packed dirt from the snap ring groove.
  • Do not gouge or enlarge the bore.

Step 12: Press In the New Ball Joint

  • Position the new front lower ball joint squarely in the steering knuckle.
  • Use the ball joint press kit with the correct installer cup to press the new ball joint fully into the knuckle.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the joint before pressing, so you can see if it starts to rotate or tilt.
  • Press until the ball joint shoulder seats fully against the knuckle.
  • Straight pressing prevents knuckle damage.

Step 13: Install the New Snap Ring

  • Use snap ring pliers to install the new snap ring into the groove.
  • Confirm the snap ring is fully seated all the way around.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver lightly to verify it is locked into the groove.

Step 14: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Lower Control Arm

  • Guide the ball joint stud into the lower control arm by hand.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench and matching socket or crowfoot wrench to tighten the lower ball joint castle nut to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until the hole aligns. Do not loosen the nut to align it.

Step 15: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the ball joint stud hole.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the castle nut.
  • Make sure the pin cannot contact the brake rotor or wheel.

Step 16: Reinstall Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to reinstall the brake hose and ABS wire brackets.
  • Tighten small bracket bolts snugly to Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs) if exact bracket torque is not listed on the bracket hardware.
  • Confirm the hose and wire have slack through the full steering range.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Do not fully torque the lug nuts while the wheel is off the ground.

Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheel

  • Use the floor jack to lift slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Civic until the tire just touches the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the vehicle fully.

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked to check for hose, wire, or suspension contact.
  • ✅ Road test slowly first. Listen for clunks, rubbing, or pulling.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after the short road test using a 19mm socket and torque wrench.
  • ✅ Schedule a front-end alignment after replacing a ball joint.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the car pulls, avoid high-speed driving until alignment is completed.
