🔧 Pilot - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This repair covers replacing the front lower ball joints on your Pilot. The lower ball joint connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm and allows the wheel to steer and move with the suspension.

  • ⚠️ Support your Pilot with jack stands, not just a floor jack. A jack stand is a fixed support that holds the vehicle safely while you work.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the axle threads or ball joint stud.
  • ⚠️ The coil spring and suspension are under load. Keep hands clear when separating the ball joint.
  • ⚠️ Replace cotter pins and staked axle nuts. Do not reuse them.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after this repair to prevent tire wear and poor handling.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Pilot on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the wheel position if you want to reinstall it in the same spot.
  • 🔩 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 🛞 Only work on one side at a time so the other side can be used as a reference.
  • 📐 Schedule a wheel alignment after both sides are complete.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Wheel and Axle Nut

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts one turn.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver or brass punch to lift the staked edge of the axle nut. “Staked” means the nut edge is bent into a groove to lock it in place.
  • Use a 32mm axle nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the axle nut while the wheel is still on the ground.
  • Loosen only; do not remove yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Pilot at the front subframe lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side pinch welds or approved support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath or pulling on suspension parts.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Axle Nut

  • Use a 32mm axle nut socket to remove the axle nut fully.
  • Push the axle inward slightly by hand.
  • If stuck, use a brass punch and hammer 2-lb to tap the axle inward. Do not hit the axle directly with a steel hammer.

Step 5: Move Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets Aside

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the brake hose and ABS wire brackets from the strut or knuckle area as needed.
  • Use a bungee cord to support the wire or hose away from your work area without stretching it.

Step 6: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link if Needed

  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the stabilizer link nut from the strut bracket if extra movement is needed.
  • A stabilizer link connects the suspension to the sway bar and helps reduce body roll.
  • If the link stud spins, hold the stud with the appropriate wrench while turning the nut with the 17mm socket.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin and Castle Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • A cotter pin is a small locking pin that prevents the nut from backing off.
  • Use a 19mm socket to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Leave the castle nut threaded on a few turns to control the joint when it pops loose.

Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Lower Control Arm

  • Apply penetrating oil around the ball joint stud and lower control arm taper.
  • Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the lower control arm and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator with the correct socket from your kit until the taper releases.
  • Remove the castle nut fully using the 19mm socket.
  • A loud pop is normal.

Step 9: Free the Steering Knuckle from the Axle

  • Pull the lower part of the steering knuckle outward by hand while guiding the axle inward through the hub.
  • Use a brass punch and hammer 2-lb only if the axle needs gentle help sliding through the hub.
  • Support the knuckle with a bungee cord so it does not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire.

Step 10: Remove the Ball Joint Snap Ring

  • Clean the snap ring area with brake cleaner.
  • Use snap ring pliers (specialty) to remove the snap ring from the top of the ball joint.
  • A snap ring is a spring steel retaining ring that locks the ball joint into the knuckle.

Step 11: Press Out the Old Ball Joint

  • Set up the ball joint press kit with Honda adapters (specialty) so the receiving cup supports the steering knuckle and gives the old ball joint room to move out.
  • Use the correct press adapter against the ball joint housing, not against the rubber boot.
  • Tighten the press with a 22mm socket or the socket required by your press kit until the old ball joint is pressed out.
  • Keep the press straight. If it tilts, stop and reset the adapters.

Step 12: Press In the New Ball Joint

  • Clean the bore in the steering knuckle with brake cleaner.
  • Position the new front lower ball joint squarely in the knuckle.
  • Use the ball joint press kit with Honda adapters (specialty) to press the new ball joint into place.
  • Press only on the outer metal shell of the ball joint. Do not press on the stud or boot.
  • Continue pressing until the ball joint is fully seated and the snap ring groove is visible.

Step 13: Install the New Snap Ring

  • Use snap ring pliers (specialty) to install the new snap ring into the groove.
  • Make sure the snap ring is fully seated all the way around the ball joint.
  • If it is not seated, stop here.

Step 14: Reconnect the Knuckle and Axle

  • Guide the axle splines back through the hub by hand.
  • Move the steering knuckle back over the lower control arm using a pry bar 18-inch if gentle leverage is needed.
  • Insert the new ball joint stud into the lower control arm taper.

Step 15: Install the Lower Ball Joint Castle Nut

  • Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb to tighten the castle nut.
  • Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
  • Continue tightening only as needed to line up the cotter pin hole. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
  • Install the new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends over securely.

Step 16: Reinstall Brackets and Stabilizer Link

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall the brake hose and ABS wire brackets.
  • If removed, reinstall the stabilizer link nut using a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench.
  • Torque stabilizer link nut to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
  • Torque brake hose and ABS wire bracket bolts to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Install the New Axle Nut

  • Thread the new axle nut on by hand.
  • Use a 32mm axle nut socket to snug the axle nut while the vehicle is still raised.
  • Final torque will be done with the wheel on the ground.

Step 18: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • A star pattern means tightening across the wheel, not in a circle, so the wheel seats evenly.

Step 19: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Fasteners

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly, remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum, then lower your Pilot to the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench 50-250 ft-lb and 19mm socket to torque the wheel lug nuts.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench 50-250 ft-lb and 32mm axle nut socket to torque the axle nut.
  • Torque axle nut to 245 Nm (181 ft-lbs).
  • Use a brass punch and hammer 2-lb to stake the new axle nut into the axle groove.

Step 20: Repeat on the Other Side if Replacing in Pairs

  • Use the same tools and steps for the other front lower ball joint.
  • Replacing in pairs is recommended if both sides have similar mileage or wear.

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for rubbing, clicking, or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first, then recheck for clunks, looseness, or steering pull.
  • ✅ Recheck that the cotter pin is installed and the axle nut is staked.
  • ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • ✅ After 25-50 miles, recheck the wheel lug nut torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
