On your Edge, the front lower ball joint is serviced with the lower control arm assembly. Replacing the control arm restores the tight connection between the steering knuckle and suspension arm, which helps eliminate clunks, looseness, uneven tire wear, and unsafe steering play.

  • ⚠️ The ball joint connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm. If it separates suddenly, the knuckle can drop or swing outward.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not normally required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Edge on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint pinch bolt and lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the control arm bolts before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.
  • A ball joint separator is a wedge or press-style tool that separates the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Edge at the front subframe jacking area.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Ball Joint and Control Arm Area

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Look at the rubber ball joint boot for tearing, grease leakage, or looseness.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to move any plastic splash shield clips only if they block access.

Step 5: Support the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the floor jack under the outer lower control arm area with light pressure only.
  • This supports the knuckle when the ball joint is separated.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Use the 15mm wrench to hold the nut if needed.
  • Use the correct-size socket from your set, commonly 15mm socket or 18mm socket depending on hardware, with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt nut.
  • Pull the pinch bolt out of the steering knuckle.
  • If it is stuck, use penetrating oil and tap it gently with the 2-lb hammer.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator tool between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive ratchet or 21mm wrench as required by the separator tool to apply pressure.
  • Once the joint breaks free, lower the floor jack slightly to let the control arm drop away from the knuckle.
  • Use the pry bar 18-inch carefully if extra movement is needed.
  • Do not pull on the brake hose.

Step 8: Mark the Control Arm Mounting Positions

  • Use the paint marker to mark the location of the front and rear lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • These marks help you install the new arm close to the original position.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use the 21mm socket, 24mm socket, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench as needed to remove the front and rear lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
  • Support the arm by hand as the final bolt comes out.
  • Remove the lower control arm assembly from your Edge.

Step 10: Compare the New Control Arm

  • Place the new front lower control arm with ball joint next to the old one.
  • Confirm the shape, bushing locations, and ball joint direction match.
  • Use the needle-nose pliers only if a shipping clip or cotter-style retainer needs removal from the new part.

Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Position the new control arm into the subframe.
  • Install the new mounting bolts and nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and matching 21mm socket, 24mm socket, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench to snug the bolts.
  • Do not fully torque the bushing bolts yet.
  • Final torque must be at ride height.

Step 12: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the floor jack to raise the outer control arm slowly until the ball joint stud seats fully into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut by hand.
  • Use the proper socket and wrench from your tool list to tighten the pinch bolt.
  • Torque the lower ball joint pinch bolt to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts at Ride Height

  • Use the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm to raise the suspension until it sits near normal ride height.
  • Use the torque wrench with the correct socket/wrench combination to tighten the control arm mounting bolts.
  • Torque the front lower control arm mounting bolt to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Torque the rear lower control arm mounting bolt to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • If your replacement hardware includes torque-angle instructions, follow the hardware instructions supplied with the part.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel onto the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to lift your Edge slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for binding, popping, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for clunks over small bumps.
  • ✅ Recheck that the wheel lug nuts are torqued to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs) after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible. This repair changes suspension position.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, avoid highway driving until the alignment is completed.
