🔧 Mustang - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This job replaces the front lower ball joints on your Mustang. The ball joint is the pivot point between the steering knuckle and the lower control arm, and a worn one can cause clunks, loose steering, uneven tire wear, or unsafe handling.

Assumption: On your Mustang, the front lower ball joint is normally serviced with the lower control arm assembly rather than pressed out separately.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Mustang with jack stands only; never work under a car held up by a jack.
  • ⚠️ The front suspension is heavy. Keep fingers clear when separating the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the threaded ball joint stud. Damaged threads can prevent safe reassembly.
  • ⚠️ Replace suspension fasteners if they are damaged, stretched, or heavily corroded.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after this repair.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this mechanical repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the car.
  • 📸 Take photos before disassembly so you can compare the new control arm position.
  • 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the position of the old control arm bolts and washers before removal.
  • 📌 A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break lugs loose before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front End

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Mustang at the proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front pinch weld or approved support points.
  • Lower the car gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching a solid support point as a backup.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the side of the car as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect and Mark the Control Arm Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm mounting bolts and washers.
  • This helps you get the new arm close to the original position before the alignment.
  • Look at the ball joint boot. If it is torn, leaking grease, or the joint moves loosely, replacement is needed.

Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Use the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm. Do not lift the car off the jack stand.
  • This removes tension from the ball joint area and makes separation safer.

Step 6: Disconnect Small Brackets if Attached

  • If a brake hose or ABS wire bracket is attached to the control arm, use a 10mm socket or 15mm socket to remove the bracket bolt.
  • Move the bracket aside gently. Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire.

Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint Nut

  • If equipped with a cotter pin, use needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove it.
  • Use a 21mm wrench or 21mm socket to loosen and remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • If the ball joint stud spins, apply upward pressure under the control arm with the floor jack while loosening the nut.

Step 8: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator until the tapered stud pops loose.
  • A loud pop is normal when the taper releases.
  • If needed, use a hammer to tap the side of the steering knuckle near the ball joint taper. Do not hit the threaded stud.
  • Keep hands away from pinch points.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the lower control arm inner mounting bolts and nuts.
  • Use a breaker bar if the bolts are tight.
  • Support the control arm with one hand while removing the final bolt.
  • Remove the old control arm from the vehicle.

Step 10: Compare the Old and New Control Arm

  • Place the old and new lower control arms side by side.
  • Confirm the ball joint location, bushing shape, and bracket positions match.
  • Use a paint marker to transfer any helpful alignment marks to the new arm.

Step 11: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Position the new lower control arm into the subframe mounts.
  • Install the inner mounting bolts and nuts by hand first.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to snug the bolts, but do not final-tighten yet.
  • The bushings must be final-tightened at normal ride height to prevent early bushing failure.

Step 12: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the new ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the ball joint nut to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
  • If equipped with a cotter pin, use needle-nose pliers to install and bend a new cotter pin.

Step 13: Reattach Any Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall any brake hose or ABS wire brackets removed earlier.
  • Make sure the brake hose and ABS wire are not twisted, stretched, or rubbing the tire area.

Step 14: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until it sits close to normal ride height.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Final-tighten bushings at ride height.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to lift slightly, then remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Mustang fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for binding or knocking.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for clunks over small bumps.
  • ✅ Recheck that the brake hose and ABS wire are routed correctly.
  • ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible after replacing the lower control arm or ball joint.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles of driving.
