📋 Before You Begin

  • ✅ Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • ✅ Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and mounting area 10-15 minutes before removal.
  • ✅ A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
  • ✅ A ball joint press is a large clamp-style tool used to push the old joint out and press the new joint in straight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support Your Tucson

  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point or the correct side pinch weld lift point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the reinforced front side pinch welds.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) as a light backup support, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Ball Joint Area

  • Use the wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the ball joint nut, cotter pin, and lower control arm area.
  • Use the paint marker to mark the position of nearby suspension hardware if anything must be loosened.
  • Use penetrating oil spray on the ball joint nut and retaining area.

Step 5: Remove the Cotter Pin and Nut

  • Use the needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the ball joint stud.
  • Use the 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the ball joint castle nut.
  • If the nut is tight, use the breaker bar 1/2-inch drive.
  • Thread the nut back on a few turns by hand after loosening. This helps catch the joint when it pops free.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator until the tapered stud pops loose.
  • If needed, use the hammer 3 lb to strike the side of the steering knuckle near the taper while pressure is applied with the separator.
  • Remove the loosened nut by hand once the joint separates.
  • Do not hit the stud.

Step 7: Free the Lower Control Arm

  • Use the pry bar 18-inch to gently push the lower control arm downward.
  • Move the ball joint stud out of the steering knuckle opening.
  • Do not pull hard on the brake hose, ABS wire, or axle boot.

Step 8: Remove the Ball Joint Retainer

  • Use the snap ring pliers to remove the retaining snap ring from the lower ball joint.
  • If rust is present, use the wire brush and penetrating oil spray before removing the snap ring.

Step 9: Press Out the Old Ball Joint

  • Set up the ball joint press kit (specialty) with the correct receiver cup under the ball joint and press adapter on top.
  • Use the 22mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to turn the press screw.
  • Press the old ball joint straight out of the lower control arm.
  • If it binds, stop and realign the press cups.
  • Press straight, not crooked.

Step 10: Press In the New Ball Joint

  • Clean the lower control arm bore with the wire brush.
  • Position the new front lower ball joint squarely in the lower control arm.
  • Use the ball joint press kit (specialty), 22mm socket, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to press the new joint into place.
  • Make sure the ball joint shoulder seats fully against the control arm.
  • Install the new retaining snap ring with the snap ring pliers.

Step 11: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the pry bar 18-inch to lower the control arm enough to guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 19mm socket or 22mm socket with the torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the ball joint nut to Torque to 78-98 Nm (58-72 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it aligns. Do not loosen it to align the hole.
  • Install the new cotter pin using the needle-nose pliers and bend the ends around the nut.

Step 12: Recheck Nearby Hardware

  • If any lower control arm or bracket bolts were loosened, use the 17mm socket, 19mm socket, or 22mm socket with the torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten them securely.
  • For lower control arm mounting bolts, final tightening should be done with the suspension at normal ride height whenever possible.
  • If the control arm-to-subframe bolts were removed, tighten them to Torque to 137-157 Nm (101-116 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Tucson until the tire just touches the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 107-127 Nm (79-94 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite front lower ball joint using the same tools.
  • Replacing both sides keeps steering feel and suspension wear balanced.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked and listen for binding, popping, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for clunks over small bumps.
  • ✅ Recheck the cotter pins and ball joint boots after the test drive.
  • ✅ Recheck the wheel lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment after the repair.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, the vehicle pulls, or the tires squeal, do not delay the alignment.
