  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the axle threads, ball joint stud, or brake rotor.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that pops the tapered ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
  • If the ball joint boot is torn or the joint has play, replacement is required. Do not inject grease as a repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting for stability.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point or approved front side jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the approved front support points.
  • Gently lower your Tucson onto the jack stands.
  • Use mechanic gloves and push the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect and Clean the Ball Joint Area

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the lower ball joint nut, cotter pin, and mounting bolts.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint stud nut and the ball joint-to-control-arm bolts.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the original position of the ball joint flange on the lower control arm.
  • Marks help keep alignment close.

Step 5: Remove the Cotter Pin and Ball Joint Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the ball joint stud.
  • Use a 19mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to loosen the ball joint castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns while separating the joint. This helps control the release.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint stud and the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator with the correct socket from your tool kit until the stud pops loose.
  • If needed, tap the side of the knuckle lightly with a dead blow hammer 2-lb.
  • Remove the loosened ball joint nut using the 19mm socket.
  • A loud pop is normal.

Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint from the Lower Control Arm

  • Use a 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the ball joint mounting bolts/nuts from the lower control arm.
  • Support the lower control arm with one hand while removing the final fastener.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch only if the ball joint is stuck to the control arm.
  • Remove the old ball joint.

Step 8: Install the New Ball Joint

  • Position the new front lower ball joint on the lower control arm using your paint marks as a starting reference.
  • Install the mounting bolts/nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the ball joint-to-control-arm fasteners to Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch carefully if you need to move the lower control arm slightly downward.
  • Install the ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the ball joint stud nut to Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen it to align the hole.

Step 10: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Insert the new ball joint cotter pin through the stud hole.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the nut.
  • The cotter pin is a small locking pin that prevents the nut from backing off.

Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 12: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Side if Replacing in Pairs

  • Use the same tools and steps on the opposite front lower ball joint.
  • Replace in pairs for even steering feel and suspension wear.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Check that the steering feels normal and the vehicle tracks straight.
  • ✅ Recheck the front wheel lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • ✅ Schedule a front-end alignment after the repair. Ball joint position can affect alignment.
  • ✅ If your Tucson still clunks, inspect sway bar links, control arm bushings, struts, and tie rod ends.
