🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Escape at the front subframe lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat on the ground.

Step 4: Clean and Mark the Mounting Points

  • Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the lower control arm mounting bolts and ball joint pinch bolt area.
  • Spray the bolts with penetrating oil and let it soak for several minutes.

Step 5: Remove the Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Locate the lower ball joint where it fits into the bottom of the steering knuckle.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  • Discard the old pinch bolt and nut if replacement hardware is available.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a ball joint separator to carefully separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, use a pry bar to push the lower control arm downward while keeping hands away from pinch points.
  • Use a rubber mallet only for light taps on the control arm, not on the threaded stud.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Support the control arm by hand so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 18mm socket, or 21mm socket as fitted to remove the front and rear lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Use the matching 15mm wrench, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench to hold the nut if it spins.
  • Remove the old lower control arm from the subframe.

Step 8: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Position the new front lower control arm with ball joint into the subframe.
  • Install the control arm mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive ratchet with the correct socket to snug the bolts, but do not fully torque them yet.
  • Start all bolts before tightening any one bolt.

Step 9: Insert the Ball Joint into the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a pry bar to guide the new ball joint stud into the steering knuckle opening.
  • Make sure the ball joint stud is fully seated in the knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint pinch bolt and nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolt to Torque to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Torque the Control Arm Bolts at Ride Height

  • Use a floor jack under the outer lower control arm to raise the suspension until it is near normal ride height.
  • Ride height means the suspension is sitting like it does when the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Use the correct 15mm socket, 18mm socket, or 21mm socket with a torque wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).
  • If your replacement hardware includes torque-to-yield instructions, follow the hardware maker’s angle-tightening directions.

Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower your Escape to the ground.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side if Needed

  • If replacing both sides, repeat the same steps on the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Use the same tools and torque values.

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for clunks or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check for pulling, knocking, or steering wheel off-center.

  • Use a paint marker to mark the old control arm position if any mounting marks are visible.

Step 5: Remove the Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Find the lower ball joint where it enters the bottom of the steering knuckle.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  • Set the old bolt aside and use a new bolt during reassembly if supplied.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle

  • Install the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
  • Use the ball joint separator to separate the ball joint stud from the knuckle.
  • If needed, use a pry bar to gently push the control arm downward.
  • Use a rubber mallet only for light taps on the control arm.
  • Keep fingers away from pinch points.

Step 7: Remove the Lower Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket, 18mm socket, or 21mm socket to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts, depending on the bolt location and replacement hardware.
  • Use the matching 15mm wrench, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench if a nut turns with the bolt.
  • Support the control arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the old lower control arm from your Escape.

Step 8: Position the New Control Arm

  • Place the new front lower control arm with ball joint into the subframe mounting pockets.
  • Install the control arm mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive ratchet and the correct socket to snug the bolts lightly.
  • Do not fully tighten the control arm bolts yet.
  • Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.

Step 9: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a pry bar to guide the new ball joint stud into the bottom of the steering knuckle.
  • Make sure the ball joint stud seats fully in the knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint pinch bolt and nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolt to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Tighten the Control Arm at Ride Height

  • Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm.
  • Raise the control arm until the suspension is close to normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the suspension is positioned like it is when the vehicle is sitting on its tires.
  • Use the correct 15mm socket, 18mm socket, or 21mm socket with a torque wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Put the wheel back on the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Escape to the ground.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat for the Other Side if Needed

  • If replacing both front ball joints, repeat the same process on the opposite side.
  • Replace in pairs if both sides have worn boots, looseness, or clunking.
