🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Car
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front side support points.
- Slowly lower your Corolla onto the jack stands.
- Gently push the car by hand to make sure it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the rocker area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Clean and Mark the Ball Joint Area
- Use the wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the lower ball joint nut and mounting bolts.
- Use the paint marker to mark the ball joint position against the lower control arm if the mounting holes allow slight movement.
- Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nut and mounting bolts.
Step 5: Remove the Cotter Pin and Castle Nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the ball joint stud.
- Use a 19mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to loosen the castle nut.
- Leave the castle nut threaded on a few turns while separating the joint. This helps control sudden movement.
Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Slide the ball joint separator fork between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
- Strike the separator with the hammer 2-lb until the tapered stud pops loose.
- If needed, use the pry bar 18-inch gently to relieve pressure on the lower control arm.
- Once separated, remove the castle nut fully with the 19mm socket.
- Keep hands away from pinch points.
Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint Mounting Bolts
- Use the 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the ball joint mounting bolts from the lower control arm.
- Support the steering knuckle by hand as the last bolt comes out so it does not pull on the axle or brake hose.
- If the ball joint is stuck in place, tap the mounting flange gently with the hammer 2-lb.
Step 8: Compare the Old and New Ball Joint
- Place the old and new front lower ball joint side by side.
- Check that the mounting holes, stud angle, dust boot, and overall shape match.
- Do not install a part that looks different from the original.
Step 9: Install the New Ball Joint to the Lower Control Arm
- Position the new ball joint on the lower control arm using your paint marks as a guide.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the mounting bolts.
- Torque to 89 Nm (66 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Connect the Ball Joint Stud to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use the pry bar 18-inch only if you need gentle leverage to line it up.
- Install the new castle nut by hand.
- Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the castle nut.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Install the New Cotter Pin
- Check that the castle nut slot lines up with the hole in the ball joint stud.
- If it does not line up, tighten the castle nut slightly more with the 19mm socket. Do not loosen it to align the hole.
- Insert the new cotter pin and bend the ends over with needle-nose pliers.
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat the same process on the opposite front lower ball joint using the same tools.
- Replacing both sides gives more even steering feel and handling.
Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back on the hub.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
Step 14: Lower the Car and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the car slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Corolla fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or binding.
- Take a slow test drive on a quiet road. Start under 25 mph.
- Recheck that the cotter pins are installed and the dust boots are not twisted or torn.
- Have a four-wheel alignment performed as soon as possible.
- After 25-50 miles, recheck the lug nut torque with the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
