🔧 CX-5 - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower ball joint, which connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm and allows the wheel to steer and move with the suspension. On your CX-5, the lower ball joint is serviced with the front lower control arm assembly, not normally pressed out by itself.

  • ⚠️ Support your CX-5 with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle held by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Suspension parts can spring or shift suddenly. Keep your hands clear when separating the ball joint.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the aluminum steering knuckle. It can crack.
  • ⚠️ Replace damaged or heavily corroded fasteners. Suspension fasteners are safety-critical.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint pinch bolt, lower control arm bolts, and stabilizer link nut.
  • A ball joint separator is a wedge-style tool that separates the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle without damaging the knuckle.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to a specific force so suspension parts are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break lug nuts loose on the ground.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your CX-5 at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the front crossmember as a backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Ball Joint Area

  • Use safety glasses and a light to look at the lower ball joint where it enters the steering knuckle.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm bolts. This helps you get close before the alignment.
  • Spray penetrating oil again on the pinch bolt and control arm bolts.

Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link if Needed

  • Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the lower control arm if it blocks arm removal.
  • Move the stabilizer link aside by hand.
  • If the link stud spins, hold the stud with the correct internal hex or wrench flats while turning the nut with the 14mm wrench.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut from the steering knuckle.
  • If the bolt is stuck, apply penetrating oil and gently tap it out with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not use an air hammer on the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint stud and the steering knuckle.
  • Apply steady pressure until the ball joint stud releases from the knuckle.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch only for gentle leverage on the control arm.
  • Do not pull outward on the axle shaft. Pulling the axle too far can damage the inner CV joint.
  • Slow pressure works better than hard hits.

Step 8: Support the Knuckle

  • Use the floor jack under the lower edge of the steering knuckle or brake rotor area to prevent the suspension from dropping suddenly.
  • Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stands.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the rear lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Use a 21mm socket or 22mm socket with the matching wrench to remove the front lower control arm mounting bolt and nut if equipped with that size fastener.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently slide the lower control arm out of the subframe brackets.
  • Note the bolt direction before removal so the new arm goes back the same way.

Step 10: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Place the new front lower control arm with ball joint into the subframe brackets by hand.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket, 21mm socket, or 22mm socket as needed to snug the bolts, but do not fully tighten them yet.
  • Leaving the bolts slightly loose prevents bushing twist while the suspension is hanging.

Step 11: Seat the Ball Joint into the Knuckle

  • Guide the new ball joint stud into the bottom of the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use the floor jack carefully under the control arm to raise it until the ball joint seats fully.
  • Install the new pinch bolt and nut by hand.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to tighten the pinch bolt.
  • Torque to 54-69 Nm (40-51 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link

  • Move the stabilizer link back into the lower control arm bracket.
  • Install the nut by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to tighten the stabilizer link nut.
  • Torque to 43-60 Nm (32-44 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the control arm is near normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the suspension is sitting about where it does when the vehicle is on the ground.
  • This step protects the rubber bushings from being twisted and failing early.

Step 14: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 21mm socket, or 22mm socket with the matching wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 115-145 Nm (85-107 ft-lbs).
  • Use the paint marker to mark each tightened bolt and nut so you know it has been torqued.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Install all lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your CX-5 fully to the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for popping or binding.
  • ✅ Take a slow test drive first. Avoid highway speeds until you know the steering feels normal.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, stop driving and schedule an alignment.
  • ✅ Get a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible after replacing the lower control arm.
  • ✅ Recheck the wheel lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ Inspect the ball joint pinch bolt and control arm bolts again after the test drive.
