🔧 TITAN - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This job replaces the front lower ball joints on your TITAN. The lower ball joint connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm and lets the wheel turn and move with the suspension; when worn, it can cause clunks, loose steering, uneven tire wear, or unsafe wheel movement.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

Assumption: This covers the front lower ball joints, which are the common serviceable ball joints on your TITAN. Replace left and right sides in pairs.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your TITAN with jack stands before working underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ The front suspension is heavy. Keep fingers clear when separating the knuckle from the ball joint.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the ball joint stud threads. Damaged threads can prevent proper tightening.
  • ⚠️ Use a torque wrench for final tightening. Suspension fasteners that are too loose or too tight are unsafe.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after this repair to prevent tire wear and steering pull.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your TITAN on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut, steering tie rod nut, and any visible snap ring area.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of nearby suspension parts before removal. This helps you spot anything that moved during the job.
  • A ball joint press is a large clamp-style tool that pushes the old ball joint out and presses the new one in straight.
  • A snap ring is a round retaining clip that locks the ball joint into the control arm.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen first, lift second.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front End

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your TITAN at the front frame crossmember.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use the floor jack lightly under the lower control arm to support it without lifting the truck off the stands.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Disconnect the Outer Tie Rod from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use needle nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod nut.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the tie rod castle nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  • Move the tie rod aside and support it with a bungee cord.
  • Torque during installation: outer tie rod nut to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin and Nut

  • Use needle nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This keeps the knuckle from dropping suddenly when the joint pops loose.

Step 6: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the ball joint separator between the lower control arm and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the separator until the tapered stud pops free from the knuckle.
  • If needed, use a hammer 2-3 lb to tap the side of the steering knuckle near the joint, not the threaded stud.
  • Remove the lower ball joint nut completely with the 24mm socket.
  • Support the steering knuckle with a bungee cord so the brake hose and ABS wire are not stretched.

Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint Snap Ring

  • Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the snap ring area on the lower control arm.
  • Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the top side of the ball joint.
  • If the snap ring is rusty, apply penetrating oil and work it loose carefully.

Step 8: Press Out the Old Ball Joint

  • Set up the ball joint press kit with the receiver cup positioned so the old ball joint can press downward out of the lower control arm.
  • Use a 22mm socket or the press kit forcing screw adapter to tighten the press.
  • Keep the press straight. If it tilts, stop and reposition it.
  • Press the old ball joint fully out of the lower control arm.
  • Straight pressure prevents control arm damage.

Step 9: Clean the Ball Joint Bore

  • Use a wire brush to clean the ball joint opening in the lower control arm.
  • Wipe away rust, dirt, and old grease.
  • Do not grind or enlarge the hole. The new ball joint must fit tightly.

Step 10: Press In the New Ball Joint

  • Position the new front lower ball joint squarely in the lower control arm.
  • Set up the ball joint press kit so the pressure is applied only to the outer shell of the new ball joint, not the stud or dust boot.
  • Use the 22mm socket or press adapter to tighten the press until the ball joint seats fully against the control arm.
  • Confirm the snap ring groove is fully visible.

Step 11: Install the New Snap Ring

  • Use snap ring pliers to install the new snap ring into the groove.
  • Make sure the snap ring is fully seated all the way around.
  • Use a small pry bar only if needed to gently confirm the snap ring is locked in place.

Step 12: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise it slightly if needed.
  • Install the lower ball joint castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut.
  • Torque to 128 Nm (94 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.
  • Use needle nose pliers to install a new cotter pin.

Step 13: Reconnect the Outer Tie Rod

  • Insert the outer tie rod stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the castle nut by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut.
  • Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.
  • Use needle nose pliers to install a new cotter pin.

Step 14: Grease the New Ball Joint if Serviceable

  • If the new ball joint has a grease fitting, use a grease gun with chassis grease to add grease until the dust boot just begins to swell.
  • Do not overfill the boot. Too much grease can split it.
  • If the ball joint is sealed and has no fitting, skip this step.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Put the wheel back on the hub.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your TITAN slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tire to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same tools and steps on the opposite front lower ball joint.
  • Always replace ball joints in pairs so steering and suspension feel even side-to-side.

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for binding, popping, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Check that cotter pins are installed in both lower ball joint nuts and tie rod nuts.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for clunks and confirm the steering returns normally.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
