- ⚠️ Do not touch orange hybrid-system cables or connectors. Hybrid-system isolation is not required for this repair.
- ⚠️ Do not allow the steering knuckle to hang from the brake hose or ABS sensor wire.
- ⚠️ A compressed suspension joint can separate suddenly. Keep your hands clear while using the separator.
- ⚠️ The 12-volt battery does not need to be disconnected.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the hybrid system off.
- Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- Keep the key fob away from your Prius so the hybrid system cannot be switched on accidentally.
- Check the replacement joints against the originals before dismantling either side.
- No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, EPB retraction, or hybrid-battery isolation is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Wear safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
- Use a 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn. Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the hydraulic floor jack at the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front crossmember.
- Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front side support points.
- Lower your Prius carefully onto the stands. Give the body a gentle push to verify stability.
- Leave the hydraulic floor jack lightly touching the center lifting point as backup support.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both wheels and slide them beneath the side sills as additional protection.
Step 4: Inspect and Prepare the Joint
- Turn the steering wheel to expose the ball joint on the side being serviced.
- Use the nylon parts-cleaning brush to clean the ball-joint stud, nut, and control-arm fasteners.
- Apply penetrating oil sparingly to the exposed threads. Keep it away from the brake rotor and pads.
- Use a paint marker to mark the original fastener positions for reference.
Step 5: Remove the Ball-Joint Cotter Pin and Nut
- A cotter pin is a small split metal locking pin that prevents the nut from turning loose.
- Use needle-nose pliers and a small flat-blade screwdriver to straighten and remove the cotter pin. Discard it.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the castellated nut. A castellated nut has slots around its top for the cotter pin.
- Leave the nut threaded on by three or four turns while separating the joint.
Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Fit the front lower ball joint separator between the joint and steering knuckle. A ball joint separator applies controlled pressure without striking the threaded stud.
- Tighten the separator with the appropriate 17mm or 19mm combination wrench until the tapered stud releases.
- If necessary, tap the side of the knuckle lightly with the soft-face hammer while the separator is under tension.
- Do not strike the threaded stud, brake rotor, ABS sensor, or aluminum components.
- Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened nut completely.
Step 7: Support the Steering Knuckle
- Use mechanic’s wire to support the steering knuckle from the strut spring.
- Leave enough movement to remove the joint, but do not pull on the brake hose, axle, or ABS sensor wire.
Step 8: Remove the Ball Joint from the Control Arm
- Use a 17mm socket, 17mm combination wrench, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the ball-joint mounting bolts and nut from the lower control arm.
- Use the medium pry bar gently to separate the ball-joint flange from the control arm.
- Remove the ball joint from beneath the steering knuckle.
- Do not enlarge the mounting holes or hammer against the control arm.
Step 9: Install the New Ball Joint
- Use the nylon parts-cleaning brush to clean the control-arm mounting surface.
- Position the new ball joint in the same orientation as the original.
- Install the supplied mounting hardware by hand. Confirm that every fastener threads smoothly before tightening.
- Use the 17mm socket, 17mm combination wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the ball-joint-to-control-arm fasteners evenly to 89 Nm (66 ft-lbs).
- Do not apply grease or anti-seize to the threads unless the replacement-part manufacturer specifically requires it.
Step 10: Connect the Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball-joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use the medium pry bar only against a solid control-arm area if gentle alignment pressure is needed.
- Install the new castellated nut and tighten it with the 19mm socket and torque wrench to 71 Nm (52 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter-pin holes do not align, tighten the nut only until the next slot aligns. Never loosen the nut to align it.
- Use needle-nose pliers to install and bend a new cotter pin securely around the nut.
- Never reuse an old cotter pin.
Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 4-10 using the same listed tools.
- Verify that neither brake hose nor ABS sensor wire is twisted or stretched.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm impact socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern. Do not fully tighten them while raised.
Step 13: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise your Prius slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle completely, then remove the floor jack and wheel chocks.
- Use the 21mm impact socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ With your Prius stationary, switch the hybrid system to READY and turn the steering slowly from lock to lock. Listen for interference or unusual noises.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm it feels normal before moving.
- Drive slowly in a safe area. Check for clunks, pulling, warning lights, or abnormal steering.
- Have a four-wheel alignment checked after replacement. Ball-joint work can reveal or alter existing toe settings.
- Stop driving immediately if a joint moves in the control arm, a cotter pin is missing, or steering feels unstable.
- Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
