🔧 Outback - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower ball joint, which connects the steering knuckle to the lower control arm. A worn ball joint can cause clunking, loose steering, uneven tire wear, or unsafe wheel movement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint pinch bolt and lower castle nut. Let it soak for at least 10-15 minutes.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that pushes tapered suspension parts apart without damaging nearby parts.
  • A ball joint press is a C-shaped tool that presses the old joint out and the new joint in straight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not fully remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Outback at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Clean and Mark the Ball Joint Area

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the lower ball joint, pinch bolt, and control arm area.
  • Use penetrating oil again on the pinch bolt and the lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the ball joint position as a visual reference.

Step 5: Remove the Ball Joint Cotter Pin and Castle Nut

  • Use needle nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • Use a 19mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the castle nut from the ball joint stud.
  • If the stud spins, apply light upward pressure under the control arm with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), then remove the nut.

Step 6: Separate the Ball Joint from the Lower Control Arm

  • Install the ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm and the ball joint stud.
  • Tighten the separator until the taper pops free.
  • If using a pickle fork separator (specialty), place it between the joint and control arm, then strike it with a hammer 2-lb.
  • Be aware that a pickle fork usually damages the rubber boot, which is okay when replacing the joint.

Step 7: Remove the Steering Knuckle Pinch Bolt

  • Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the pinch bolt and nut at the steering knuckle.
  • The pinch bolt clamps the ball joint into the steering knuckle.
  • Discard the old pinch bolt and nut if replacements are available.

Step 8: Remove the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver carefully in the knuckle split to slightly open the clamp area.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to push the lower control arm downward while pulling the ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
  • If stuck, tap the side of the steering knuckle near the ball joint bore with a hammer 2-lb.
  • Do not strike the axle shaft or wheel bearing.

Step 9: Press the Old Ball Joint Out of the Control Arm

  • Set up the ball joint press kit (specialty) with the correct receiver cup under the control arm.
  • Use a ratchet 1/2-inch drive and the press screw to push the old ball joint out of the lower control arm.
  • Keep the press straight so it does not bend the control arm opening.
  • Straight pressure prevents damage.

Step 10: Press the New Ball Joint Into the Control Arm

  • Clean the lower control arm bore with a wire brush.
  • Apply a very light coat of anti-seize compound to the outside edge of the new ball joint only.
  • Use the ball joint press kit (specialty) to press the new ball joint into the control arm until fully seated.
  • Make sure the joint sits square and flush in the control arm.

Step 11: Install the Ball Joint into the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the ball joint upper stem into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm to raise it slowly until the ball joint seats fully in the knuckle.
  • Install the new pinch bolt and nut using a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Attach the Ball Joint Stud to the Lower Control Arm

  • Insert the ball joint stud through the lower control arm.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the castle nut.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs), then tighten only enough to align the cotter pin hole.
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle nose pliers.

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for binding, popping, or scraping.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Start with a short drive around the block.
  • ✅ Recheck the ball joint area for movement, loose hardware, or torn boots.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Schedule a front alignment to protect the tires and keep steering centered.
  • ✅ If your Outback still clunks, inspect the front sway bar links, control arm bushings, and strut mounts.
