🔧 Forester - Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower ball joint, which connects the lower control arm to the steering knuckle and lets the front suspension steer and move smoothly. On your Forester, the ball joint is serviced at the front lower control arm/knuckle connection and should be replaced if it has play, torn boot, clunking, or failed inspection.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Forester with jack stands only; never work under a vehicle held up by a jack.
  • ⚠️ The front suspension is heavy. Keep hands clear when separating the ball joint from the knuckle.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the CV axle threads or steering knuckle bore.
  • ⚠️ Replace the ball joint pinch bolt/nut if badly rusted, stretched, or damaged.
  • ⚠️ If the ball joint is rust-seized in the knuckle, avoid excessive heat near the CV axle boot, ABS wire, and brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Forester on a flat, solid surface and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔩 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 🧰 A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pops the tapered stud loose without damaging nearby parts.
  • 🧰 A ball joint press is a large clamp-style tool used to push the ball joint out of or into the control arm/knuckle area when needed.
  • 🧰 A cotter pin is a small bent safety pin that prevents the ball joint nut from backing off.
  • 🛞 Plan for a wheel alignment after replacement, especially if both sides are replaced or any suspension position shifts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Wheel

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Forester at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as a backup safety measure.

Step 4: Inspect the Ball Joint Area

  • Use safety glasses and a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the ball joint, pinch bolt, and control arm area.
  • Spray the pinch bolt, castle nut, and ball joint seat with penetrating oil.
  • Wait 5-10 minutes if the hardware is rusty.

Step 5: Remove the Ball Joint Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the ball joint stud.
  • If the cotter pin breaks, use the needle-nose pliers to remove all remaining pieces.

Step 6: Loosen the Ball Joint Castle Nut

  • Use a 19mm socket or 19mm wrench to loosen the castle nut on the lower ball joint stud.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This helps control the joint when it pops loose.
  • Leaving the nut on is safer.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint Stud from the Control Arm

  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the ball joint stud from the lower control arm.
  • If using a pickle fork separator, place it between the ball joint and control arm, then tap it with a dead blow hammer.
  • Once the taper breaks loose, remove the castle nut fully with the 19mm socket.
  • Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire while moving the knuckle.

Step 8: Remove the Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut at the steering knuckle.
  • If the bolt is stuck, apply penetrating oil and work it back and forth gently with the 14mm socket.
  • Do not force a badly rusted bolt until it snaps.

Step 9: Remove the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to carefully move the lower control arm downward.
  • Use a brass punch and dead blow hammer to tap the ball joint body out of the steering knuckle if it is stuck.
  • If needed, use the ball joint press kit to press the joint out evenly.
  • Keep the CV axle from being pulled outward too far.

Step 10: Clean the Knuckle Bore

  • Use a wire brush to clean the inside of the steering knuckle bore where the ball joint sits.
  • Wipe away rust and dirt by hand with gloves on.
  • Apply a very light coat of anti-seize compound to the outside of the new ball joint body only.
  • Do not put anti-seize on the tapered stud or nut threads unless the part maker says to.

Step 11: Install the New Ball Joint into the Knuckle

  • Line up the new ball joint with the steering knuckle bore by hand.
  • Use the ball joint press kit or dead blow hammer to seat it fully and squarely.
  • Make sure the pinch bolt groove in the ball joint lines up with the hole in the knuckle.
  • Fully seated means no gap.

Step 12: Install the Pinch Bolt

  • Insert the new pinch bolt through the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 14mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the pinch bolt.
  • Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Reconnect the Ball Joint to the Lower Control Arm

  • Use the pry bar 18-inch to carefully align the lower control arm with the ball joint stud.
  • Guide the ball joint stud into the lower control arm hole by hand.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the nut.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs)
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.

Step 14: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the ball joint stud hole.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the nut.
  • Make sure the cotter pin cannot fall out.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Forester until the tire touches the ground and cannot spin.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for binding, clunks, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Drive slowly at first and test braking and steering in a safe area.
  • ✅ Recheck that the cotter pin is installed and the ball joint boot is not twisted or torn.
  • ✅ After a short test drive, visually inspect the ball joint and pinch bolt area again.
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment if steering wheel position changed, tire wear is uneven, or both ball joints were replaced.
