🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame crossmember or approved front jacking point.
- Raise the front of your Ranger high enough for the tire to clear the ground.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame.
- Lower the truck gently onto the stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.

- This keeps the suspension from dropping suddenly when the ball joint is separated.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use a 21mm socket or 24mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This prevents the knuckle from popping loose suddenly.
Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint stud and the steering knuckle.
- Tighten the separator using a 21mm socket or the size required by the tool until the taper pops loose.
- If using a pickle fork separator (specialty), tap it with a dead-blow hammer until the joint separates.
- Remove the loosened lower ball joint nut by hand after the joint has separated.
- Keep hands clear when it pops.
Step 8: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use an 18mm socket, 21mm socket, or 24mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front and rear lower control arm mounting bolts.
- Hold the nut side with an 18mm wrench, 21mm wrench, or 24mm wrench as needed.
- Remove the bolts and washers while noting their direction and order.
- Use a paint marker to label front and rear hardware if needed.
Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Assembly
- Lower the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum slightly to take pressure off the arm.
- Use a pry bar 24-inch to gently work the lower control arm out of the frame brackets.
- Remove the control arm from your Ranger.
Step 10: Position the New Lower Control Arm
- Compare the new front lower control arm assembly with ball joint to the old one by hand before installation.
- Slide the new lower control arm into the frame brackets.
- Use a pry bar 24-inch gently if needed to line up the bushing sleeves.
Step 11: Install the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Insert the lower control arm bolts and washers in the same direction as removed.
- Use the paint marker marks to return cam washers close to their original positions.
- Use an 18mm socket, 21mm socket, or 24mm socket with matching wrench to snug the bolts only.
- Do not final-tighten the control arm bushing bolts yet.
Step 12: Attach the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm to raise the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket or 24mm socket and torque wrench 50-250 Nm range to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 150 Nm (111 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Set the Suspension to Normal Ride Height
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the truck just begins to lift off the jack stand on that side.
- This simulates normal ride height so the rubber bushings are not twisted at rest.
- Keep the frame supported by the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
Step 14: Final-Tighten the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use an 18mm socket, 21mm socket, or 24mm socket with the matching wrench to hold the nut side.
- Use a torque wrench 50-250 Nm range to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
- Keep the alignment cam marks as close as possible to your original paint marker marks.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheel
- Place the wheel on the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Ranger until the tire just touches the ground.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 50-250 Nm range to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower your Ranger and remove the wheel chocks.
