- Park your Escape on flat, solid ground.
- Set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint pinch bolt, lower control arm bolts, and stabilizer bar end link nut.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that safely pushes the ball joint loose from the steering knuckle.
- A bushing is the rubber part of the control arm that absorbs road vibration.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do this before lifting the vehicle so the wheel does not spin.
- Break them loose first.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Escape at the front subframe jacking area.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum nearby for supporting the control arm later.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark around the lower control arm mounting bolt areas.
- This helps place the new arm close to the original position before alignment.
Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar End Link
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the stabilizer bar end link nut from the lower control arm.
- If the stud spins, hold the stud with the proper holding point and turn the nut with a 15mm wrench.
- Move the link aside without bending it.
Step 6: Remove the Ball Joint Pinch Bolt
- Find the pinch bolt at the bottom of the steering knuckle where the ball joint stud enters.
- Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the pinch bolt and nut.
- Use penetrating oil if the bolt is rusty.
Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Place the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
- Tighten or strike the separator as designed until the ball joint pops free.
- Use a rubber mallet only for gentle tapping if needed.
- Do not pull on the brake hose or axle while the knuckle is loose.
- Stay clear when it releases.
Step 8: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lightly support the lower control arm.
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the front and rear lower control arm bolts/nuts.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently slide the control arm out of the subframe brackets.
Step 9: Install the New Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly
- Position the new front lower control arm with ball joint into the subframe brackets.
- Use the 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to install the mounting bolts and nuts finger-tight only.
- Do not fully tighten the bolts yet.
Step 10: Seat the Ball Joint in the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball joint stud fully into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the control arm to gently raise it if needed.
- Install the new lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
- Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten it.
- Torque to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar End Link
- Insert the stabilizer bar end link stud through the control arm.
- Use a 15mm socket, 15mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the nut.
- Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the lower control arm.
- Raise the arm until it sits close to normal ride height.
- This keeps the rubber bushings from being twisted after the vehicle is lowered.
- This step protects new bushings.
Step 13: Tighten the Lower Control Arm Bolts
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts.
- Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
- If your new hardware includes different torque instructions, follow the included hardware instructions.
Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back on the hub.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
Step 15: Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for popping, rubbing, or clunking.
- ✅ Drive slowly at first and confirm the steering feels normal.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after a short drive.
