📋 Before You Begin
- Park your HR-V on level ground.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut and lower control arm mounting bolts.
- A ball joint separator is a tool that pushes the ball joint stud out of the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
- A cotter pin is a small bent safety pin that keeps the castle nut from backing off.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your HR-V at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching as backup support, but do not rely on it alone.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position
- Use a paint marker to mark around the lower control arm mounting points.
- This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the new arm close to the original position.
Step 5: Remove the Ball Joint Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
- If the cotter pin breaks, remove all remaining pieces before loosening the nut.
Step 6: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use a 17mm socket or 17mm wrench to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns. This helps catch the joint when it pops loose.
- Do not remove it yet.
Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the lower control arm ball joint and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the separator tool until the ball joint stud pops free from the knuckle.
- Use a rubber mallet only for light taps if needed.
- Remove the loosened castle nut once the joint is separated.
Step 8: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link if Needed
- If the lower control arm will not move down enough, use a 14mm socket and 14mm wrench to remove the stabilizer link nut from the control arm.
- The stabilizer link connects the suspension arm to the sway bar, which reduces body roll in turns.
- Reinstall later and tighten the stabilizer link nut to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a 17mm socket, 19mm socket, and matching wrench as needed to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Support the control arm with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch only if the bushings are stuck in their brackets.
- Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
Step 10: Install the New Lower Control Arm
- Position the new front lower control arm with ball joint into the subframe brackets.
- Use your hands to start all mounting bolts and nuts before tightening anything.
- Use the paint marker marks to line up the new arm as closely as possible.
- Do not fully torque the bushing bolts while the suspension is hanging.
Step 11: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new ball joint castle nut.
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to 59 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- Continue tightening only enough to line up the castle nut slot with the cotter pin hole.
- Install the new ball joint cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
- Bend the cotter pin ends around the nut so it cannot fall out.
Step 12: Reconnect the Stabilizer Link
- If removed, reinstall the stabilizer link to the lower control arm.
- Use a 14mm socket, 14mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
- Tighten the stabilizer link nut to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the outer end of the lower control arm.
- Raise the control arm slightly until it sits near normal ride height.
- This prevents twisting the rubber bushings when the vehicle is lowered.
- Rubber bushings last longer this way.
Step 14: Torque the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use the correct 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
- Tighten the front lower control arm mounting bolt to 64 Nm (47 ft-lbs).
- Tighten the rear lower control arm mounting fastener to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Make sure the arm is fully seated in its brackets before final torque.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel
- Install the wheel by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your HR-V to the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for popping, binding, or rubbing.
- ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Check that the steering feels stable and centered.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after the first short drive: 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
- ✅ Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible after replacing the lower control arm.
- ✅ If your HR-V pulls, the steering wheel is crooked, or tires squeal, do not delay the alignment.
