This repair restores safe steering and suspension movement when the ball joint is loose, clunking, torn, or failed.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint pinch bolt and control arm mounting bolts.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that safely separates the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness specification.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen while the tire is on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Escape at the front subframe lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the proper front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm mounting points against the subframe.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps keep the position close during reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Control Arm

  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the lower control arm if it attaches to the arm.
  • If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct internal hex or wrench flats while removing the nut with the 15mm socket.
  • Move the stabilizer link aside by hand.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Pinch Bolt

  • Locate the pinch bolt at the bottom of the steering knuckle where the ball joint stud enters the knuckle.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  • If rust is present, apply penetrating oil and let it soak for a few minutes.
  • A pinch bolt clamps the steering knuckle around the ball joint stud.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle

  • Use a ball joint separator to carefully separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  • Use a pry bar to press the lower control arm downward while guiding the stud out of the knuckle.
  • Use a dead blow hammer only on the control arm if light tapping is needed.
  • Do not strike the steering knuckle directly.

Step 8: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Support the control arm by hand so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the rear lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Set the bolt aside only if it will be reused.

Step 9: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to remove the front lower control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Pull the lower control arm assembly out of the subframe.
  • If it is tight, use a pry bar gently at the bushing area.

Step 10: Install the New Control Arm

  • Position the new lower control arm assembly into the subframe.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, 21mm socket, and 21mm wrench to snug the bolts, but do not fully tighten them yet.
  • Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.

Step 11: Insert the Ball Joint into the Knuckle

  • Use a pry bar to lower the control arm enough to guide the ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Make sure the ball joint stud seats fully in the knuckle.
  • Install the new pinch bolt and nut by hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolt to Torque to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link

  • Place the stabilizer bar link stud back into the lower control arm.
  • Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut to Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Preload the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack under the outer lower control arm to raise the suspension until the control arm sits near normal ride height.
  • This prevents the rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.
  • A bushing is a rubber-mounted joint that reduces vibration and allows controlled movement.

Step 14: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, and torque wrench on the front control arm bolt.
  • Tighten the front control arm bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench on the rear control arm bolt.
  • Tighten the rear control arm bolt to Torque to 175 Nm (129 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock and listen for binding or clunks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check for pulling, knocking, or steering wheel off-center.
  • ✅ Schedule a four-wheel alignment immediately after replacing a front lower control arm.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If warning lights appear after the repair, scan the ABS and steering systems.
