🔧 Tacoma - Front Control Arm Replacement

This job replaces the front suspension control arms on your Tacoma. Control arms hold the wheel in position while allowing the suspension to move, and worn bushings or ball joints can cause clunks, uneven tire wear, wandering steering, or poor alignment.

Assumption: This guide covers front upper and lower control arms. Replace only the arm(s) that failed inspection.

  • ⚠️ Support your Tacoma with jack stands before working underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ The front coil spring/strut assembly stores force. Do not loosen the center strut shaft nut.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Rust, dirt, and metal chips can fall while working.
  • ⚠️ Mark cam bolt positions before removing the lower control arm. These bolts affect alignment.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Tacoma on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 📋 Spray penetrating oil on the control arm bolts, ball joint nuts, sway bar links, and cam bolts. Let it soak for at least 10 minutes.
  • 📋 A cam bolt is an eccentric alignment bolt. Its position controls front wheel alignment, so mark it before removal.
  • 📋 If you are replacing both sides, do one side at a time so the other side can be used as a visual reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front crossmember to lift your Tacoma.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the truck to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as a backup safety support.
  • Keep lug nuts in a cup.

Step 4: Remove Skid Plate or Splash Shield if Needed

  • Use a 12mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the front skid plate or splash shield bolts if they block access.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool for plastic clips if equipped.
  • Set the shield aside.

Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the outer end of the lower control arm.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
  • This keeps the suspension from dropping suddenly when joints are separated.

Step 6: Disconnect the Sway Bar Link if It Blocks Movement

  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the sway bar link nut at the lower control arm.
  • Move the sway bar link aside.
  • A sway bar link connects the suspension arm to the anti-roll bar to reduce body lean in turns.

Step 7: Disconnect Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove any brake hose or wheel speed sensor brackets attached near the control arm or steering knuckle.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver carefully to release wire clips if needed.
  • Do not stretch the brake hose or ABS wire.

Step 8: Separate the Upper Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint castle nut.
  • A castle nut is a slotted nut that uses a cotter pin to keep it from loosening.
  • Use a 19mm socket or 19mm wrench to loosen and remove the upper ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • If using a pickle fork ball joint tool (specialty), expect the ball joint boot to be damaged; only use it when replacing the arm.
  • Use a dead blow hammer 2-lb only on the separator tool, not directly on the ball joint threads.

Step 9: Remove the Upper Control Arm

  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the upper control arm pivot bolt and nut.
  • Slide the bolt out and remove the upper control arm from the frame brackets.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch gently if the bushings stick in the brackets.

Step 10: Install the New Upper Control Arm

  • Place the new upper control arm into the frame brackets.
  • Use your hands to slide the pivot bolt through the bushings and bracket.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to install the nut finger-tight only.
  • Do not fully tighten the pivot bolt yet.

Step 11: Attach the Upper Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket to install the castle nut.
  • Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs).
  • Use needle-nose pliers to install a new cotter pin through the nut and stud.
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more. Never loosen it to align the hole.

Step 12: Mark the Lower Control Arm Cam Bolts

  • Use a paint marker to draw alignment marks across each cam washer, frame bracket, and bolt position.
  • Mark both front and rear lower control arm cam bolts.
  • These marks help you get close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop.

Step 13: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Use a 24mm socket or 24mm wrench to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Keep the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm while separating it.

Step 14: Remove the Front Strut Lower Bolt if Needed

  • If the strut blocks lower control arm removal, use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the lower strut bolt and nut.
  • Do not remove the center nut at the top of the strut.
  • Move the bottom of the strut slightly aside by hand.

Step 15: Remove the Lower Control Arm Cam Bolts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 22mm wrench to remove the front and rear lower control arm cam bolt nuts.
  • Slide the cam bolts and cam washers out, keeping each washer orientation noted.
  • Use a wire brush and penetrating oil if the bolts are rusty.
  • If the cam bolts are seized inside the bushings, replace the cam bolt kit.

Step 16: Remove the Lower Control Arm

  • Lower the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) slightly to unload the arm.
  • Remove the lower control arm from the frame brackets by hand.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch gently if the bushings are stuck.

Step 17: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Position the new lower control arm in the frame brackets.
  • Install the cam bolts and cam washers in the same orientation as your paint marks.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 22mm wrench to install the nuts finger-tight only.
  • Do not fully tighten the cam bolts yet.

Step 18: Attach the Lower Ball Joint

  • Raise the lower control arm carefully with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Use a 24mm socket to install the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
  • Use needle-nose pliers to install a new cotter pin.

Step 19: Reinstall the Strut Lower Bolt if Removed

  • Align the lower strut mount with the lower control arm.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to install the lower strut bolt and nut.
  • Leave it snug for now if the suspension is still hanging.

Step 20: Reconnect the Sway Bar Link and Brackets

  • Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to reconnect the sway bar link to the lower control arm.
  • Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall brake hose and ABS wire brackets.
  • Torque small bracket bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 21: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the truck just starts to lift off the jack stand.
  • This simulates normal ride height so the rubber bushings are not twisted when tightened.
  • This step protects new bushings.

Step 22: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive 10-250 ft-lb to tighten the upper control arm pivot bolt.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive 10-250 ft-lb to tighten the lower control arm cam bolt nuts.
  • Torque to 180 Nm (133 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to tighten the lower strut bolt if removed.
  • Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 23: Reinstall the Skid Plate or Splash Shield

  • Use a 12mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall skid plate or splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips if equipped.
  • Tighten small shield bolts snugly. Do not over-tighten plastic clips.

Step 24: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket to install the lug nuts finger-tight in a star pattern.
  • Lower the truck with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive 10-250 ft-lb and 21mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of your Tacoma a few times and listen for clunks.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and make sure no brake hose or ABS wire is stretched.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Listen for knocking, popping, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment immediately. Control arm replacement changes camber, caster, and toe.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm socket and torque wrench.
