🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Control Arm Replacement

This repair replaces the front upper and lower control arms on your Grand Cherokee. Control arms locate the wheel and allow the suspension to move; worn bushings or ball joints can cause clunking, wandering steering, uneven tire wear, or alignment problems.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never work under your Grand Cherokee with only a jack holding it up. Always use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Suspension parts are heavy and can shift suddenly. Keep fingers away from pinch points.
  • ⚠️ Do not remove the front strut center nut. It holds spring tension and can cause serious injury.
  • ⚠️ Final-tighten control arm bushing bolts only with the suspension at normal ride height.
  • ⚠️ A 4-wheel alignment is required after this repair.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on a flat, solid surface.
  • Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Spray the control arm bolts and ball joint nuts with penetrating oil before starting.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the lower control arm cam bolt positions before removal.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that presses a ball joint loose from the steering knuckle.
  • A pickle fork is a wedge tool that separates a ball joint, but it usually damages the old rubber boot.
  • A cam bolt is an alignment bolt with an offset washer used to adjust wheel alignment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front of your Grand Cherokee at the front crossmember.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the front lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels.
  • Keep lug nuts together.

Step 4: Remove Splash Shields if Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any splash shield bolts blocking access.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips carefully.

Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm near the ball joint.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm.
  • Do not lift your Grand Cherokee off the jack stand.

Step 6: Remove the Upper Ball Joint Nut

  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the upper ball joint nut.
  • If the ball joint stud spins, use a pry bar 24-inch to apply light pressure while turning the nut with an 18mm wrench.

Step 7: Separate the Upper Ball Joint

  • Use a ball joint separator tool to press the upper ball joint loose from the steering knuckle.
  • If needed, tap the separator with a dead blow hammer.
  • Do not strike the threaded stud directly.

Step 8: Remove the Upper Control Arm

  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper control arm mounting bolts.
  • Remove the upper control arm from your Grand Cherokee.
  • Use a wire brush and shop rags to clean the mounting pockets.

Step 9: Install the New Upper Control Arm

  • Place the new front upper control arm assembly into the mounting pockets.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to snug the bolts only.
  • Do not final-tighten the bushing bolts yet.

Step 10: Connect the Upper Ball Joint

  • Insert the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new upper ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm to tighten the nut.
  • Torque upper ball joint nut to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Mark the Lower Control Arm Cam Bolts

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of each lower control arm cam washer.
  • Mark the washer and the frame so you can line them up during installation.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps for the short drive to the shop.

Step 12: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower ball joint nut.
  • If the stud spins, use a pry bar 24-inch to add light pressure while loosening the nut with a 21mm wrench.

Step 13: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use a ball joint separator tool to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • If it is stuck, use a pickle fork ball joint separator and dead blow hammer.
  • Lower the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum slowly to relax suspension tension.

Step 14: Remove the Lower Control Arm

  • Use a 21mm socket, 24mm socket, 21mm wrench, or 24mm wrench to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar for tight bolts.
  • Remove the lower control arm from the subframe.
  • Use a wire brush and shop rags to clean the mounting areas.

Step 15: Install the New Lower Control Arm

  • Place the new front lower control arm assembly into the subframe mounts.
  • Install all bolts and nuts by hand first.
  • Line up the cam washers with your paint marks.
  • Use a 21mm socket, 24mm socket, 21mm wrench, or 24mm wrench to snug the bolts only.

Step 16: Connect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the lower control arm until the lower ball joint stud fits into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm to tighten the nut.
  • Torque lower ball joint nut to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the opposite front side.
  • Use the same tools and safety steps.
  • Replace left and right together.

Step 18: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm to raise the suspension close to normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the suspension is sitting about where it sits when your Grand Cherokee is on the ground.
  • This keeps the new rubber bushings from being twisted after installation.

Step 19: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm, correct socket, and matching wrench to tighten the upper control arm mounting bolts.
  • Torque upper control arm mounting bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm, correct socket, and matching wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Torque lower control arm mounting bolts to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

Step 20: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install the front wheels by hand.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Grand Cherokee slightly.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee to the ground.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
  • ✅ Take a slow test drive first. Avoid highways and rough roads until alignment is done.
  • ✅ Get a professional 4-wheel alignment immediately.
  • ✅ Recheck the wheel lug nut torque after 50-100 miles.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, the vehicle pulls, or warning lights appear, stop driving and have the alignment and suspension inspected.

🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Control Arm Replacement

This repair replaces the front upper and lower control arms on your Grand Cherokee. The control arms hold the wheel in the correct position while the suspension moves up and down, and worn bushings or ball joints can cause clunks, loose steering, uneven tire wear, or poor alignment.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Rust, dirt, and metal flakes can fall while working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Do not remove the center nut on the front strut assembly. The spring is under high tension.
  • ⚠️ Support the lower control arm before separating ball joints so the suspension does not drop suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Final-tighten control arm bushing bolts only with the suspension loaded at normal ride height.
  • ⚠️ A professional wheel alignment is required after replacing control arms.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

  • Use a wire brush and shop rags to clean the mounting pockets.

Step 9: Install the New Upper Control Arm

  • Place the new front upper control arm assembly into the mounting pockets.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to snug the bolts only.
  • Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.

Step 10: Connect the Upper Ball Joint

  • Guide the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.

  • Torque lower ball joint nut to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Repeat the Same Work on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the opposite front side.
  • Use the same tools and the same safety steps.
  • Replacing pairs keeps handling even.

Step 18: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm to raise the suspension close to normal ride height.
  • Normal ride height means the control arm is sitting about where it sits when your Grand Cherokee is on the ground.
  • This prevents the new rubber bushings from being twisted at rest.

Step 19: Final-Tighten the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 250 Nm, the correct socket, and the matching wrench to tighten the upper control arm mounting bolts.
