🔧 Frontier - Front Coil-Over Shock Replacement

Your Frontier does not use true front struts. It uses a front coil-over shock assembly, which is a shock absorber with a coil spring mounted around it.

This repair replaces the complete front coil-over assemblies. Replacing the complete assembly is safer for a beginner because the coil spring stays contained.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Frontier on flat, solid ground.
• Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
• Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
• Spray penetrating oil on the lower shock bolt and the three upper shock mounting nuts.
• Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower shock bolt before removal. This helps you reinstall it the same way.
• A coil-over assembly means the coil spring and shock are one unit. A loaded assembly comes preassembled and avoids spring compression.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
• Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
• Break them loose on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Frontier at the front crossmember.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
• Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
• Gently shake the truck by hand to make sure it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the front lug nuts.
• Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

• Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm near the lower shock mount.
• Raise the jack just enough to support the control arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
• The lower control arm is the large metal arm that holds the bottom of the wheel suspension.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Shock Mounting Bolt

• Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower shock bolt and nut.
• If the bolt is tight, use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar.
• If needed, gently move the lower control arm up or down with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to take pressure off the bolt.
• Remove the bolt and set it aside if you are reusing it.

Step 6: Remove the Upper Shock Mounting Nuts

• Open the hood for better visibility if needed.
• Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the three upper shock mounting nuts.
• Do not remove the center shaft nut on the top of the coil-over assembly.
• The center shaft nut holds spring tension. Removing it can be dangerous.

Step 7: Remove the Old Coil-Over Assembly

• Lower the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum slightly to create room.
• Pull the bottom of the shock free from the lower control arm.
• Use a pry bar 18-inch only if light leverage is needed.
• Guide the old coil-over assembly down and out through the wheel opening.
• If it sticks, use a rubber mallet to tap the lower mount lightly.

Step 8: Install the New Coil-Over Assembly

• Position the new loaded coil-over assembly into the upper mount first.
• Start the three new upper mounting nuts by hand.
• Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the upper mounting nuts to Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
• Make sure the lower shock eye lines up with the lower control arm mount.

Step 9: Install the Lower Shock Bolt

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise or lower the control arm until the bolt holes line up.
• Slide the lower shock bolt through by hand.
• Install the nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the lower shock bolt to Torque to 155 Nm (114 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the Other Side

• Repeat Steps 4 through 9 on the opposite front side.
• Use the same tools and torque values.
• Replace both sides before driving your Frontier.

Step 11: Reinstall the Front Wheels

• Install the wheels by hand.
• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
• A star pattern means tightening across the wheel instead of going in a circle.

Step 12: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your Frontier to the ground.
• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

• ✅ Bounce each front corner of your Frontier by hand. It should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
• ✅ Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks, rubbing, or loose hardware.
• ✅ Recheck the front lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench.
• ✅ Have a front wheel alignment performed after replacing front coil-over assemblies.
• ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the truck pulls, do not delay the alignment.
