This repair replaces the front disc brake pads on your RAV4. The front pads wear down over time and should be replaced before they get too thin, squeal, or damage the brake rotors.

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Work on a flat, solid surface only. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ๐Ÿงค Wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust and sharp metal edges can irritate skin and eyes.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Do not work on brakes right after driving. Brake parts can be very hot.
  • โš ๏ธ Your RAV4 has an electric parking brake, but this front brake pad job does not require EPB service mode because the EPB acts on the rear brakes.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for front brake pad replacement.
  • ๐Ÿšซ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
  • ๐Ÿ›ž Replace front brake pads as a pair: both left and right front wheels must be serviced together.

  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Bungee cord
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your RAV4 on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir near the driver-side rear of the engine bay.
  • Check the brake fluid level. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before pushing the caliper pistons back.
  • Do not leave the brake fluid reservoir uncapped for long. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Tip: Loosen only. Do not remove yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your RAV4.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before removing wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
  • Slide one wheel partly under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the brake caliper, rotor, pads, and rubber brake hose.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
  • If the brake hose is cracked, leaking, or twisted, do not continue until it is repaired.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
  • A slide pin bolt lets the caliper move smoothly as the brake pads wear.
  • Keep the bolt clean and set it aside.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor if the caliper feels tight.
  • Swing the caliper upward like a hinge.
  • Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the strut spring.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • If they are stuck, use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry them out.
  • Remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket by hand or with the flat blade screwdriver.
  • These clips are pad hardware. They help the pads slide quietly and evenly.

Step 8: Clean the Pad Contact Areas

  • Use a small wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the caliper bracket where the pad clips sit.
  • Use brake cleaner spray nozzle to spray the bracket and rotor surface.
  • Keep brake cleaner away from painted surfaces and rubber parts when possible.
  • Let the parts dry before adding lubricant.

Step 9: Install the New Pad Hardware

  • Press the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure each clip sits fully flat and matches the position of the old clip.
  • Apply a very thin layer of synthetic brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
  • Do not get grease on the friction surface of the pads or rotor.
  • Tip: Thin grease film only.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the disc brake caliper spreader tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • The piston is the round metal part that pushes the inner brake pad.
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it does not overflow.

Step 11: Install the New Front Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pad ears must slide smoothly in the new clips.
  • If a pad is tight, remove it and clean the bracket again with the small wire brush.

Step 12: Lower the Caliper and Tighten the Bolt

  • Remove the bungee cord and swing the caliper down over the new pads.
  • Start the lower caliper slide pin bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench rated to 30 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other front wheel.
  • Use the same 14mm socket, flat blade screwdriver, small wire brush, brake cleaner spray nozzle, and disc brake caliper spreader tool.
  • Always replace pads on both front sides, not just one side.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Put each front wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
  • The pedal may go low at first. Keep pumping until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.

โœ… After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir and make sure the level is between MIN and MAX.
  • Start your RAV4 and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and normal.
  • Drive slowly in a safe area and test the brakes at low speed first.
  • Bed in the new pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-35 mph, allowing light cooling time between stops.
  • Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
