🔧 1500 - Front Brake Pad Replacement

This repair replaces the front disc brake pads on your 1500. The front pads wear down over time and should be replaced before the friction material gets too thin or damages the rotors.

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and support your 1500 with jack stands before putting any part of your body near the wheel area.
  • ⚠️ Do not rely on the floor jack alone. A floor jack lifts the truck; jack stands safely hold it up.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can irritate your lungs. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid can damage paint. Keep the brake fluid reservoir covered and wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front brake pad replacement.
  • ⚠️ Your 1500 has rear electronic parking brake hardware, but the front brake pads do not require EPB service mode.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Wheel chocks are wedges that keep the truck from rolling.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver-side rear area of the engine bay.
  • Check the brake fluid level. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • Leave the brake fluid reservoir cap loosely installed while compressing pistons so pressure can vent slowly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Tip: Loosen, do not remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your 1500 at a proper front frame or crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the brake caliper, rotor, hose, and pads before removing anything.
  • Use brake cleaner spray over a catch pan if the area is dusty.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Use a 13mm socket on the caliper guide pin bolt.
  • Use an 18mm wrench to hold the guide pin steady if it spins.
  • Remove the upper and lower caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Set the bolts aside in a clean place.

Step 6: Lift Off and Support the Caliper

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the caliper outward just enough to loosen it from the pads.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor by hand.
  • Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Slide the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket.
  • These clips are anti-rattle hardware. They help the pads move smoothly and quietly.

Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a brake parts cleaning brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Use brake cleaner spray over a catch pan to remove brake dust and old grease.
  • Make sure the new pad clips can sit flat in the bracket.

Step 9: Install the New Brake Pad Hardware

  • Install the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Press each clip fully into place so it sits flush.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the brake pad ears contact the clips.
  • Do not put grease on the pad friction surface or rotor.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • A specialty tool is a tool made for one specific job; this one pushes the pistons in evenly.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons to make sure it does not overflow.
  • Tip: Go slowly to protect seals.

Step 11: Install the New Front Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should move smoothly in the clips without forcing them.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Align the caliper guide pin bolt holes by hand.
  • Thread the guide pin bolts in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 18mm wrench to tighten the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Use the same tools and steps on the other front wheel.
  • Always replace front brake pads in pairs so braking stays even.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid level and adjust it to the correct range if needed.
  • Start your 1500 and press the brake pedal again to confirm it stays firm.
  • Look behind both front wheels for leaks or loose hardware.
  • Perform a slow test drive in a safe area and confirm the truck stops straight.
  • Bed in the new pads by making several gentle stops from moderate speed, then allow the brakes to cool.
  • Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless it is an emergency.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs)
