📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground.
  • Put the transmission in Park and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level.
  • If the reservoir is very full, use clean shop towels to protect painted surfaces from overflow.
  • A caliper is the clamp that holds the brake pads and squeezes them against the rotor.
  • A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel that the brake pads grip.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break them loose while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 at a solid front frame or crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame on both sides.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working near the wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat aside.
  • Keep the lug nuts together so none are lost.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the caliper, brake pads, rotor, and brake hose before taking anything apart.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose brake dust from the area.
  • Do not blow brake dust with compressed air.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide pin bolts.
  • If the guide pin spins, hold it steady with a 15mm wrench while removing the bolt with the 13mm socket.
  • A guide pin is a sliding pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the pads wear.

Step 6: Lift the Caliper Off the Pads

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and outer pad if the caliper feels stuck.
  • Lift the caliper off the brake pads.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension using a bungee cord.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Slide the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to carefully remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket.
  • Compare the old pads to the new front brake pad set before installing.
  • Take a quick photo before removal.

Step 8: Clean and Lubricate the Caliper Bracket

  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new clips from the front brake pad hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the hardware.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use the brake caliper compression tool to slowly press the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing; use shop towels if fluid gets close to overflowing.
  • Compress slowly to protect the brake system.

Step 10: Install the New Front Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads from the front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pads sit flat in the new clips and slide smoothly.
  • If the pads include wear indicators, install them in the same general position as the removed pads.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start the caliper guide pin bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 15mm wrench if needed to tighten the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque caliper guide pin bolts to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Move to the other front wheel.
  • Repeat Steps 4 through 11 using the same tools and new pads from the same front brake pad set.
  • Always replace front brake pads in pairs.

Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque lug nuts to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and slowly press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the proper mark.
  • Start the truck and press the brake pedal again to confirm it stays firm.
  • Test drive slowly in a safe area first.
  • Perform several gentle stops from low speed to verify normal braking.
  • Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
  • Listen for grinding, scraping, or pulling to one side; stop and recheck the work if anything feels wrong.
