🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Ranger at a solid front frame or crossmember lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front frame rails.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Gently shake the truck by hand to make sure it is stable before removing wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it steady with the 15mm wrench.
- A slide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper move side to side as the brakes apply.
Step 6: Pivot the Caliper Up
- Use the flathead screwdriver gently between the caliper and outer pad to create a little clearance.
- Pivot the caliper upward by hand.
- Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension spring or frame area.
- Do not stretch, twist, or pull on the brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flathead screwdriver to carefully remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Pad clips are thin metal guides that help the brake pads slide smoothly.
- Compare the old pads to the new pads to make sure the shape and friction surface match.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and debris from the pad clip mounting areas on the caliper bracket.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray.
- Wipe clean with shop towels.
- Keep brake cleaner off painted surfaces.
Step 9: Install the New Brake Pad Hardware
- Press the new front brake pad hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the clips sit flat and fully seated.
- Use a tiny amount of brake caliper slide pin grease on the pad contact points where the pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not put grease on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- A caliper piston is the round part that pushes the brake pad when you press the brake pedal.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if fluid gets close to overflowing.
- Go slow to protect seals.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should slide smoothly in the new clips without forcing them.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper Into Position
- Remove the bungee cord while holding the caliper by hand.
- Pivot the caliper down over the new brake pads.
- If the caliper will not fit, use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to compress the piston a little more.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Slide Pin Bolt
- Install the lower caliper slide pin bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 15mm wrench.
- Use the torque wrench and 13mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 13 on the other front wheel using the same tools.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck fully to the ground using the floor jack.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the front lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- The pedal may go low the first few presses. That is normal after pad replacement.

- ✅ Check the brake fluid reservoir and make sure the level is between MIN and MAX.
- ✅ Look behind both front wheels for any fluid leaks or loose hardware.
- ✅ Start your Ranger and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
