๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your CX-5 on level ground and shift to Park.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- ๐ Leave the parking brake off during the front brake job.
- ๐ Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- ๐งด Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Clean around the cap with a shop towel before opening it.
- ๐ Check brake fluid level. If it is near MAX, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper piston.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Break them loose before lifting.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front side support points.
- Slowly lower your CX-5 onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable before working near the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use a flashlight if needed and inspect the rotor surface, caliper, rubber brake hose, and pad thickness.
- A caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- If the rotor has deep grooves, heavy rust scaling, or vibration while braking, replace or resurface the rotors.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Bolt
- Use a 17mm wrench to hold the slide pin if it tries to spin.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower caliper slide bolt.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move side-to-side so both pads wear evenly.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flathead screwdriver medium to gently pry the caliper upward if it is snug.
- Swing the caliper up and support it with a brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Slide the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flathead screwdriver medium only if the pads are stuck.
- Note the pad wear sensor or squealer position before removing the pads.
Step 8: Remove and Clean the Pad Hardware
- Use a flathead screwdriver medium to remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush small to clean rust and dirt from the bracket where the clips sit.
- Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop towels to clean the contact areas.
- Pad clips are thin metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.
Step 9: Install New Brake Pad Hardware
- Install the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
- Less grease is better here.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use a disc brake piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston so it does not overflow.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the inner pad.
Step 11: Lubricate the Slide Pins
- Pull the accessible slide pin out by hand.
- Wipe it clean with shop towels.
- Apply a light coat of brake caliper slide pin grease.
- Push the slide pin back into the rubber boot until it moves smoothly.
- Repeat for the other slide pin if accessible.
Step 12: Install the New Front Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads slide freely in the new clips.
- If a pad is tight, remove it and clean the bracket again with the wire brush small.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper
- Swing the caliper down over the new pads by hand.
- Install the lower caliper slide bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm wrench to hold the slide pin if needed.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper slide bolt to Torque to 28-34 Nm (21-25 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the other front brake.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs, left and right together.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Put each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your CX-5 until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- If the pedal feels soft or sinks, do not drive until the issue is corrected.
Step 18: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Use shop towels to clean around the brake fluid reservoir.
- Check that the level is between MIN and MAX.
- Add DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is low.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap securely by hand.
