🔧 XT4 - Front Brake Pad Replacement
This is a manageable first brake job if you work carefully. You’ll remove each front caliper, replace all four front pads and clips, compress the pistons, then reinstall and test everything.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
Assumption: This procedure covers pad replacement with serviceable rotors and original front calipers.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support your XT4 with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- 🛑 Replace pads on both front wheels, never only one side.
- 🛑 Don’t press the brake pedal while either caliper is removed.
- 🛑 Hang the caliper securely. Never let it dangle from the rubber brake hose.
- 🛑 Wear a dust mask and use brake cleaner rather than compressed air on brake dust.
- 🛑 Keep grease, oil and brake cleaner off the pad friction surfaces.
- 🛑 Stop if a rotor is cracked, deeply scored, blue from heat or below its minimum thickness.
- 🛑 Battery disconnection and electronic parking-brake service mode aren’t required for front pads.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front ceramic brake pad set - Qty: 1
- Front brake pad hardware clips - Qty: 1 set
- Silicone brake caliper grease - Qty: 1
- Non-chlorinated brake cleaner - Qty: 1 can
- Front brake rotors - Qty: 2, only if worn or damaged
Choose a pad set with new stainless hardware when possible. Fresh clips cost little and prevent plenty of squeaks. Nobody misses a brake noise after doing the job twice.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your XT4 on hard, level ground with the transmission in Park.
- Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- Let the brakes cool completely before touching them.
- Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir without removing fluid yet.
- If the fluid is at the maximum mark, use a drain syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
- Take a picture of each caliper before disassembly so pad and clip orientation is easy to copy.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
- Don’t remove the wheel nuts while your XT4 is still fully on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and support the front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
- Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points.
- Lower your XT4 gently onto the stands, then give the body a careful push to verify stability.
Step 3: Remove both front wheels
- Use the 22mm socket and remove the loosened wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the side of the vehicle as additional protection.
Step 4: Inspect the existing brakes
- Use the brake-pad thickness gauge to compare the inner and outer pads.
- Check the rotor faces for cracks, heavy grooves, blue heat spots or a pronounced outer lip.
- If one pad is much thinner than its partner, inspect the guide pins and caliper before installing new pads.
- A badly uneven pad usually means something isn’t sliding correctly.
Step 5: Remove the caliper guide-pin bolts
- Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re servicing for easier access.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin spins, hold its flats with an appropriately sized open-end wrench.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket without twisting the brake hose.
- Support it with the brake caliper hanger hook. This is a hook that carries the caliper’s weight without stressing the hose.
Step 6: Remove the old pads and clips
- Slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift out the old stainless hardware clips.
- Note the position of any mechanical wear indicator, sometimes called a squealer, before discarding the pads.
Step 7: Clean and inspect the bracket
- Spray the bracket pad-contact areas with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Use the small wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the areas beneath the clips.
- Wipe the surfaces with shop towels until the new hardware can sit completely flat.
- Check both guide pins by hand. They should move smoothly without binding or torn rubber boots.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old pad against the piston to spread the pressure evenly.
- Position the 6-inch C-clamp over the old pad and rear of the caliper.
- Slowly tighten the clamp until the piston is fully seated inside the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
- If the reservoir approaches the maximum level, remove a small amount with the drain syringe.
- Stop if the piston binds or requires extreme force. A seized caliper must be repaired before driving.
Step 9: Install the new hardware and pads
- Press the new stainless hardware clips firmly into the cleaned bracket.
- Apply a very thin film of silicone brake caliper grease where the pad ears slide against the clips.
- Don’t apply grease to the rotor, pad friction material or rubber components unless the lubricant specifically approves them.
- Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
- Position any mechanical wear indicator to match the original pad.
- Thin grease is enough. More attracts grit.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger hook and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Make sure the brake hose isn’t twisted and the guide-pin boots aren’t pinched.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten each guide-pin bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
- Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the opposite front wheel.
Step 11: Reinstall the wheels
- Install each wheel and thread all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm socket to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise your XT4 slightly with the 3-ton floor jack, remove the stands and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs). Cadillac specifies even, crisscross tightening to avoid wheel loosening and rotor distortion. cadillaccanada.ca)
Step 12: Restore brake-pedal pressure
- With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Don’t move your XT4 until the pedal feels solid and remains above the floor.
- Inspect around both front calipers for leaks or displaced components.
✅ After Repair
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust only to the marked level using the fluid type printed on its cap.
- Start the engine and press the brake pedal firmly for approximately 30 seconds.
- Confirm the pedal remains firm and no brake-system warning appears.
- Test the brakes at walking speed before entering traffic.
- Perform 6-10 moderate stops from approximately 35 mph to 10 mph, allowing brief cooling between stops.
- Avoid panic stops, towing and prolonged brake holding during the initial bedding period.
- Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 25-50 miles.
- Don’t drive if the pedal is soft, your XT4 pulls sharply, fluid leaks or grinding continues.
