📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Odyssey on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. A reservoir is the plastic tank that stores brake fluid for the brake system.
- Keep the brake fluid cap loosely installed while compressing the caliper piston.
- If the fluid level is at or above MAX, remove a small amount with a clean fluid syringe before compressing the piston.
- Do not let brake lubricant touch the pad friction material or rotor surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your Odyssey.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front side support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Place one wheel under the frame area as a backup safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Setup
- Look at the caliper, rotor, brake hose, and pad position before disassembly.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped brake part that squeezes the pads onto the rotor.
- The rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.
- Use safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask before brushing or cleaning brake parts.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Use a 17mm wrench to hold the caliper slide pin if it turns.
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower caliper bolt.
- Set the bolt aside in a clean place.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flathead screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create slight clearance.
- Swing the caliper upward on the upper slide pin.
- Use a bungee cord 24-inch to hold the caliper up.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- If they are stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry them loose.
- Note the position of any wear indicator tab before removing the pads.
- A wear indicator is a small metal tab that squeals when pads are worn.
Step 8: Remove and Clean the Pad Hardware
- Use a small pick tool or flathead screwdriver to remove the old pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the bracket where the clips sit.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray nozzle and wipe with shop towels.
- Brake cleaner evaporates fast and removes grease from brake parts.
Step 9: Install New Pad Hardware
- Press the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure each clip sits fully flat in the bracket.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the metal contact areas where the pad ears slide.
- Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surface.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- A piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the pad during braking.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if fluid nears the top.
- Use shop towels to catch any accidental fluid overflow.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads slide smoothly in the new clips.
- If a pad is tight, remove it and clean the bracket more with the wire brush.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant only to the metal backing plate contact points.
- Thin grease layer only.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord 24-inch and carefully swing the caliper down over the new pads.
- If the caliper will not fit, use the brake caliper piston compressor tool (specialty) to compress the piston farther.
- Do not force the caliper over the pads.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Start the lower caliper bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 17mm wrench to hold the slide pin if it turns.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bolt.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 13 on the other front brake.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs.
- Use the same tools and the same 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs) caliper bolt torque.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Put both front wheels back onto the hubs by hand.
- Install the lug nuts finger-tight.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower your Odyssey until the tires touch the ground.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs)
Step 17: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before moving the vehicle, sit in the driver seat.
- Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- If you skip this, the first brake pedal press may go very low.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and adjust it to the MAX line if needed.
- ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
- ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Listen for scraping, grinding, or clunking. Stop and recheck if anything sounds wrong.
- ✅ Bed in the new pads with several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between stops.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless needed for safety.
