๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your Ridgeline on firm, level ground. Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- ๐ง Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- ๐ฑ No infotainment service mode or scan-tool command is required for the front brakes.
- ๐ Look through the wheels before disassembly. Deep rotor grooves, cracks, blue heat spots or vibration while braking may mean the rotors also require service.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Ridgeline is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the designated front lifting point.
- Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points, then lower your Ridgeline onto them.
- Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before removing either wheel.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Lift off both front wheels and place them flat away from your work area.
Step 4: Check the Brake-Fluid Level
- Wear the nitrile mechanic gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
- Unscrew the reservoir cap by hand and place it loosely over the opening.
- If the reservoir is near the MAX line, use the brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount into the drain pan.
- Do not reuse removed brake fluid. Brake fluid damages paint, so rinse any spill immediately with plenty of water.
Step 5: Remove the First Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper you are servicing is easier to reach.
- Use the 17mm socket, 6-inch extension and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- A slide pin allows the caliper to move sideways and apply both pads evenly.
- Lift the caliper from the pads. Use the bungee cord to support it from the suspension.
- Do not twist, stretch or kink the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- If they are tight, use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the pad backing plate and bracket.
- Note the exact positions of the inner pad, outer pad, wear indicator and stainless hardware before removal.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old pad-retaining hardware from the bracket.
- Place the drain pan below the brake assembly. Spray the bracket with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and clean the pad-contact areas using the nylon brake-cleaning brush.
Step 7: Inspect the Caliper and Rotor
- Inspect the rubber piston boot and slide-pin boots for tears, leakage or severe deterioration.
- Check that both slide pins move smoothly by hand. A seized pin requires correction before new pads are installed.
- Inspect both rotor faces for cracks, heavy scoring, severe rust or blue heat spots.
- Compare the old pads. Strongly uneven wear can indicate a seized slide pin, binding pad or caliper problem.
Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir as the piston retracts. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
- Stop if the piston will not retract smoothly. Forcing it can damage the caliper or hydraulic system.
Step 9: Install New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new stainless pad hardware into the caliper bracket by hand. Ensure every clip is fully seated.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
- Keep lubricant off the rotor and all pad friction material.
- Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals, including the wear indicator position.
- Verify that both pads can move within the bracket without binding.
- Use only a thin coating of lubricant.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both caliper slide-pin bolts to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 10 on the other front brake using the same listed tools.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set. Never replace only one side.
Step 12: Clean the Rotors
- Place the drain pan beneath each rotor.
- Spray both rotor faces with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Keep fingerprints, grease and brake lubricant off the cleaned surfaces.
Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Ridgeline slightly, remove the 2-ton jack stands, then lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your Ridgeline until the pedal is firm.
- Check the reservoir and adjust the level to the MAX mark using Honda Heavy Duty DOT 3 brake fluid only if needed.
- Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain stable and should not sink toward the floor.
- ๐ Check around both calipers and brake hoses for fluid leakage.
- ๐ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ๐ฃ๏ธ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make several moderate stops from about 50 km/h, allowing the brakes to cool between stops.
- ๐ฅ Avoid emergency-style stops and holding the hot brakes firmly at a stop during the first 300-500 km unless safety requires it.
- ๐ง Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
