- Put the transmission in Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. The reservoir is the small clear plastic tank near the brake master cylinder.
- Use a turkey baster or fluid syringe to remove a small amount of brake fluid if the reservoir is near the MAX line.
- A brake caliper piston spreader is a tool that gently pushes the pistons back into the caliper so the new thicker pads fit.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen while tires touch ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your Civic.
- Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.

- Use a pin punch set and small hammer to carefully tap the pad retaining pins out of the caliper.
- Hold the anti-rattle spring with your other hand as the second pin comes out.
- Remove the anti-rattle spring and set it aside if reusing, or compare it to the new hardware kit.
Step 6: Push the Old Pads Back Slightly
- Use a small flathead screwdriver between the old pad backing plate and rotor to gently create a little space.
- Work slowly and evenly. Do not pry against the rotor friction surface more than needed.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while doing this. Fluid level may rise.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Slide the old brake pads upward and out of the caliper by hand.
- If stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help lift them out.
- Keep track of pad orientation so the new pads go in the same way.
Step 8: Retract the Caliper Pistons
- Install the brake caliper piston spreader into the caliper opening.
- Slowly press the pistons back into the caliper until there is enough room for the new thicker pads.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir often. Use a turkey baster or fluid syringe to remove excess fluid if it nears the top.
- Go slow to protect seals.
Step 9: Prepare the New Pads
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop rags to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper.
- Apply a thin layer of brake pad anti-squeal lubricant only to the metal backing plate contact points.
- Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor.
Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new front brake pads into the caliper by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- Confirm both pads sit flat and move freely in the caliper.
Step 11: Reinstall the Spring and Pins
- Position the anti-rattle spring over the pads by hand.
- Slide the pad retaining pins through the caliper, pads, and spring.
- Use the small hammer and pin punch set only if light tapping is needed.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall the retaining clips if equipped.
- Factory pad retaining pins are not torqued; they must be fully seated and clipped securely.
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other front brake caliper.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs.
Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place the wheels back onto the hubs by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift your Civic slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 19mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and make sure the level is between MIN and MAX.
