📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Elantra on firm, level pavement. Select first gear, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.

- 💧 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, use a brake fluid syringe to remove a small amount so it cannot overflow when the pistons are compressed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still carrying the vehicle’s weight.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Position the hydraulic floor jack under the reinforced front-center lifting point behind the engine splash shield.
- Raise the front, then place the jack stands beneath the reinforced side pinch-weld points behind the front wheels. A pinch weld is the reinforced metal seam along the lower body edge.
- Lower your Elantra onto the stands and gently push the body to confirm it is stable.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as secondary support.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the side of the vehicle as additional protection.
Step 4: Inspect the Brakes
- Use the safety glasses and soft-bristle brake cleaning brush with non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean loose dust into the drain pan.
- Inspect each rotor for deep grooves, cracks, blue heat spots, or a heavy outer lip.
- Inspect the caliper, rubber hose, and piston boot for wetness or damage. Stop the repair if brake fluid is leaking.
- Compare the inner and outer pad wear. Large differences can indicate a sticking caliper piston or guide pin.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Turn the steering wheel to provide easier access to the caliper being serviced.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt.
- If the guide pin rotates, hold its flats with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
- Swing the caliper upward. If clearance is limited, remove the upper bolt in the same manner and lift off the caliper.
- Support a removed caliper with the caliper hanger hook. Do not twist or stretch the hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the stainless-steel pad hardware clips.
- Use brake cleaner, the soft-bristle brake cleaning brush, and shop towels to clean the pad-contact areas.
- Do not grind or file the caliper bracket.
Step 7: Check the Guide Pins
- Slide each guide pin in and out by hand. It should move smoothly without binding.
- If a pin is dry, remove it by hand, wipe it with a shop towel, and apply a thin coating of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant.
- Keep petroleum grease away from rubber boots because it can damage them.
- Reinstall each guide pin in its original location and make sure its rubber boot seals around the pin.
Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper. This tool pushes the piston back to create room for the thicker new pads.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake fluid syringe if the level approaches the reservoir opening.
- Stop if the piston tilts, binds, or requires excessive force.
- Slow pressure prevents seal and reservoir damage.
Step 9: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new front brake pad hardware clips fully into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the hardware.
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand with their friction material facing the rotor.
- Do not place lubricant on the pad friction surfaces or rotor.
- Install any wear indicator in the same orientation as the original pad.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper
- Swing or place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start the guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold the guide pin if necessary.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten each removed guide-pin bolt to Torque to 21.6-31.4 Nm (16-23 ft-lbs).
- Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the opposite front brake.
Step 11: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Clean the wheel-to-hub contact surfaces with the soft-bristle brake cleaning brush and shop towels.
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
- Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise your Elantra slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- 🦶 Before moving your Elantra, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. The first few presses may travel farther than normal.
- 💧 Check the reservoir and adjust the fluid to the MAX line only if necessary. Use fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed container.
- 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain stable, and no warning lights or leaks should appear.
- 🚗 Perform a slow test in a clear area. Confirm that braking is straight, quiet, and predictable.
- 🔥 Unless the pad manufacturer specifies another procedure, make 6-8 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing cooling time between stops. Avoid holding the hot brakes at a complete stop.
