For a street-driven Si, I’d choose a quality ceramic or street-performance pad rather than a track compound. Track pads can be noisy and weak when cold. Race-car noises lose their charm before the second traffic light.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on firm, level ground with the transmission in first gear.
- Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- Let the brakes cool completely before touching the calipers or rotors.
- Open the hood and clean around the brake-fluid reservoir cap.
- Check the reservoir level. Remove a little fluid with a clean syringe if it is near the maximum line, because compressing the caliper pistons pushes fluid back into the reservoir.
- Don’t leave the reservoir cap fully open. Set it loosely in position to keep dirt and moisture out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Keep the tires on the ground while loosening them. Don’t remove the nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and support the Civic
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the front center lifting point, then place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points.
- Lower the Civic gently onto the stands and give it a careful stability check.
- Use the 19mm deep socket to remove both front wheels.
- Slide each removed wheel under the rocker area as secondary protection.
Step 3: Inspect the brake assembly
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the working side faces outward.
- Use the safety glasses, nitrile gloves, brake cleaner and nylon brush to clean loose dirt from the caliper and pad area.
- Check the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat marks, cracks or a heavy outer lip.
- Inspect the brake hose for cracks, wetness, twists or rubbing damage.
- If one old pad is substantially thinner than its partner, stop and inspect the caliper piston and slide pins for binding.
Step 4: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper flange bolts.
- If a slide pin turns with the bolt, hold its flat section with the 14mm combination wrench.
- Lift the caliper straight off the pads without pulling on the hose.
- Support it with the caliper hanger. Don’t disconnect the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully release the stainless pad clips without gouging the bracket.
- Note the location of any wear indicator, shim or spring before removing it.
- Use the brake cleaner and nylon brush to clean the pad contact areas.
- Photograph each side before disassembly.
Step 6: Check the caliper slide pins
- Pull each slide pin gently from its rubber boot by hand.
- Confirm that both pins move smoothly and aren’t rusty, bent or deeply scored.
- Wipe them clean with a lint-free towel. Apply a thin coat of silicone brake lubricant, then reinstall them in their original positions.
- Make sure each rubber boot seats completely around the pin. A twisted boot lets water in and creates a sticking caliper.
Step 7: Compress the caliper piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston face to spread the load evenly.
- Use the 6-inch C-clamp or piston compressor to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir as the piston retracts. Remove excess fluid with the clean syringe before it overflows.
- Stop if the piston requires extreme force or moves crookedly. That indicates a possible seized caliper or damaged piston.
Step 8: Install the new hardware and pads
- Press the new stainless hardware clips into the clean caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply an extremely thin film of silicone brake lubricant only where the pad ears contact the hardware.
- Don’t put lubricant on the rotor, pad friction surfaces or rubber components unless the lubricant specifically states it is rubber-safe.
- Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
- Confirm that both pads slide freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper
- Swing the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both flange bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Hold the slide-pin flat with the 14mm combination wrench if necessary.

- Repeat Steps 3 through 9 on the opposite front side.
Step 10: Reinstall the wheels
- Clean the wheel-to-hub mounting faces with the nylon brush. Keep lubricant off the wheel studs and nuts.
- Install each wheel and start all five nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise the Civic slightly with the floor jack, remove the stands, and lower the tires until they firmly contact the ground.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm. The first few strokes may travel farther while the pistons move toward the new pads.
- Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it between the minimum and maximum marks using fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
- Install the reservoir cap securely and clean away any spilled fluid immediately.
- Start the engine and confirm the pedal remains firm. Don’t drive if it sinks, feels unusually soft or triggers a brake warning.
- Check both front calipers and hoses for leaks.
- Perform a slow test in a clear area. Verify straight braking before entering normal traffic.
- Unless the pad manufacturer gives another procedure, make 8-10 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow cooling time between stops and avoid holding the hot brakes at a complete stop.
- Avoid panic stops for roughly the first 300-500 km unless safety requires one.
- Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 50-100 km.
