- Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, use the brake-fluid extractor syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- A breaker bar is a long handle that provides extra leverage for loosening tight fasteners.
- A torque wrench tightens a fastener to an exact setting; do not use it to loosen fasteners.
- A piston compression tool slowly pushes the caliper piston back into its bore to make room for thicker new pads.
- No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- With the vehicle still on the ground, use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack under the reinforced front lifting point or one factory side lifting point.
- Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points identified by the notches in the pinch welds.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands with the floor jack.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching a lifting point as backup, without carrying the vehicle's weight.
- Push the vehicle gently to verify that it is stable before continuing.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the side of the vehicle as an additional precaution.
Step 4: Inspect the Brakes
- Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner over the disposable drain pan to wet and remove loose brake dust.
- Use the nylon brake cleaning brush and shop towels to clean enough area for inspection.
- Inspect each rotor for deep grooves, cracks, blue heat spots, or a heavy outer lip. A damaged or undersized rotor must be measured and resurfaced or replaced before installing new pads.
- Inspect the caliper, brake hose, and piston boot for fluid leakage or tears. Stop the repair if leakage is present.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide-pin bolt.
- If the guide pin turns with the bolt, hold the guide pin with the 17mm combination wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket and ratchet.
- Pivot the caliper upward. If clearance is limited, remove the upper guide-pin bolt in the same way and lift off the caliper.
- Support the caliper with the brake caliper hanger. Never suspend it by the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad hardware clips from the bracket.
- Note the position of any wear indicator tab so the new pads can be installed in the matching orientation.
Step 7: Clean and Lubricate the Contact Points
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner, the nylon brake cleaning brush, and shop towels to clean the hardware seats and exposed bracket surfaces.
- Install the new brake pad hardware clips by hand, pressing each clip fully into its seat.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
- Do not place lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
- More grease is not better.
Step 8: Check the Guide Pins
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand, one at a time, and inspect it for rust, scoring, or binding.
- Use shop towels to wipe off dirty lubricant.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant, then reinstall the pin by hand without twisting the rubber boot.
- Confirm that each guide pin moves smoothly and that each boot is fully seated.
Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place the old inner brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the front brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. If fluid approaches the top, remove a small amount with the brake-fluid extractor syringe.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force.
Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the hardware by hand.
- Confirm the pad ears are fully seated and the pads slide without binding.
- Keep the friction material clean and dry.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper
- Swing or place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start the guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Hold the guide pin with the 17mm combination wrench if necessary, then use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten each guide-pin bolt to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).
- Confirm that the rubber guide-pin boots are not pinched.
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the opposite front brake assembly.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set.
Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern while the wheels are raised.
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 88-107 Nm (65-79 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Do not move the vehicle until the pedal is firm.
- Inspect the brake-fluid reservoir and add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the MIN mark.
- Use shop towels to clean the reservoir area and secure the cap by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady rather than sinking.
- Inspect both front calipers for leaks and confirm the brake hoses are not twisted.
- Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- Bed in the pads with approximately 8 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with the brakes held immediately afterward.
- Drive for 10 minutes with minimal braking to let the brakes cool. Follow the pad manufacturer's bedding instructions if they differ.
- Avoid hard braking for the first 300-500 km unless needed for safety.
- Recheck the wheel-nut torque after 80-100 km.
