🔧 Pilot - Front Brake Pad Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads on your Pilot. Worn pads can cause squealing, longer stopping distance, brake dust buildup, or a grinding noise if ignored.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands. A jack stand supports the vehicle safely after lifting.
  • ⚠️ Front brakes get very hot. Let them cool completely before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air; use brake cleaner.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake grease off the pad friction surface and rotor face.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for front brake pad replacement on your Pilot.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Pilot on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. If it is full, remove a little fluid with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • A caliper piston is the round metal part that pushes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • Front brake pad service does not require infotainment menu steps, scan-tool commands, or electronic parking brake retraction.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Pilot at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose brake dust from the caliper area.
  • Look at the rotor surface. Deep grooves, heavy rust, blue heat spots, or shaking while braking means the rotors may need resurfacing or replacement.
  • The rotor is the round metal disc the brake pads clamp onto.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt

  • Use a 17mm wrench to hold the caliper slide pin still.
  • Use a 12mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
  • A slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the pads wear.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create a little clearance.
  • Lift the caliper upward like a hinge.
  • Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension spring or strut area.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pop the old pad hardware clips out of the bracket.
  • Use the small wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Clean metal helps prevent squeaks.

Step 8: Install New Brake Hardware

  • Install the new front brake pad hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure each clip sits fully flat and secure.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the hardware only.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place an old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use the disc brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly press the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing. Use shop towels if fluid rises near the top.
  • Move slowly so the brake fluid returns smoothly.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the back side of each new pad where it contacts the caliper.
  • Install the new inner and outer front brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Confirm the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • Shiny side does not face rotor.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper back over the new pads by hand.
  • Use the 12mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to start the lower caliper slide pin bolt by hand first.
  • Use the 17mm wrench to hold the slide pin while tightening.
  • Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other front wheel using the same tools.
  • Always replace front brake pads in pairs.

Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install each wheel by hand.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower your Pilot fully to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

Step 16: Check Brake Fluid Level

  • Use safety glasses and check the brake fluid reservoir.
  • Add DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the MIN mark.
  • Do not overfill above the MAX mark.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Pilot and press the brake pedal again. It should stay firm.
  • Check around both front calipers for leaks or loose hardware.
  • Perform a slow test drive in a safe area before normal driving.
  • Brake pad bedding: make 8-10 gentle stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph, allowing a short cooling period between stops.
  • Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
