📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛑 Set the parking brake before lifting the front of the vehicle.
  • 📦 Open the new brake pad box and compare the new pads to the old pads after removal.
  • 🧰 A caliper is the clamp-shaped brake part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
  • 🧰 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel that the brake pads press against.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Tip: Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point or approved front side jacking point.
  • Lift your Tucson high enough to remove the front wheels.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the caliper, rotor, rubber brake hose, and pad wear.
  • If the rotor has deep grooves, heavy rust scaling, or vibration during braking, the rotors should be replaced or resurfaced.
  • Do one side at a time so the other side can be used as a reference.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide pin bolt.
  • If the guide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • Remove the upper caliper guide pin bolt the same way.
  • A guide pin lets the caliper slide evenly as the pads wear.

Step 6: Lift Off and Support the Caliper

  • Use a flat-head screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor if the caliper feels stuck.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor by hand.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension spring or strut using the brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • Tip: Protect the hose from twisting.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the flat-head screwdriver to gently remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket.
  • Pad clips are small metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.

Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the pad clip mounting areas.
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner spray.
  • Let the cleaner dry fully before adding lubricant.
  • Do not spray brake cleaner on painted body panels.

Step 9: Install the New Pad Hardware

  • Press the new brake pad clips from the front brake pad hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor face or pad friction material.
  • Tip: Thin grease film only.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level.
  • If the reservoir is very full, watch closely while compressing the piston so fluid does not overflow.
  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
  • Compress slowly to avoid forcing fluid back too quickly.

Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should slide easily in the new clips.
  • If they are tight, remove them and clean the bracket again with the wire brush.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Line up the caliper guide pin bolt holes.
  • Start both guide pin bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper guide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 26-32 Nm (19-24 ft-lbs)
  • If the guide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm open-end wrench.

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Move to the opposite front brake.
  • Repeat Steps 5 through 12 using the same tools.
  • Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set, not one side only.

Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Do not fully torque them while the vehicle is still in the air.

Step 15: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Tucson until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before driving, sit in the driver seat.
  • Press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not skip this step. The first pedal press may go low.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid reservoir and make sure the level is between MIN and MAX.
  • ✅ Start your Tucson and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads by making several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after your first short drive.
