  • ⚠️ Do not inhale brake dust or clean it with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid damages paint. Immediately rinse away spills with plenty of water.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection and electronic parking-brake service mode are not required for front pad replacement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Optima on firm, level ground. Shift into Park, switch off the engine, and apply the parking brake.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • 📋 Let the brakes cool completely before touching the calipers or rotors.
  • 📋 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, use a fluid syringe to remove a small amount so it will not overflow when the pistons are compressed.
  • 📋 A caliper piston is the round metal part that pushes the pads against the rotor. The front pistons press straight inward and do not need to be rotated.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
  • Do not completely remove the nuts while your Optima is on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack at the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
  • Position jack stands beneath the reinforced side pinch-weld support points behind the front wheels.
  • Lower your Optima slowly onto the stands and verify that it is stable.
  • Give the body a gentle stability check.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use a flashlight-free visual inspection to check each rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a pronounced outer ridge.
  • Inspect the rubber brake hoses for wetness, cracking, twisting, or bulges.
  • If a rotor is cracked, severely scored, or below its stamped minimum thickness, stop and replace both front rotors.

Step 5: Remove the First Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to improve access to the caliper bolts.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper away from the rotor. Support it with the brake caliper hanger.
  • Do not disconnect the hose or allow it to carry the caliper’s weight.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the stainless pad-support clips from the top and bottom of the bracket with the small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator before removing the pads. Install the new inner pad in the same orientation.
  • Place the old inner pad against the caliper piston for the compression step.

Step 7: Clean and Lubricate the Contact Points

  • Place the drain pan beneath the brake assembly.
  • Apply non-chlorinated brake cleaner and use the nylon brake-cleaning brush to clean the hardware seats and exposed bracket surfaces.
  • Wipe the area with shop towels.
  • Install the new stainless hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs slide in the hardware.
  • Do not place lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor.

Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Position the old inner pad across the piston face.
  • Use the 6-inch C-clamp or disc-brake piston compressor to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the fluid syringe if the level approaches the rim.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or will not retract with moderate force.
  • Slow pressure helps prevent fluid overflow.

Step 9: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Use nitrile-gloved hands to install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket.
  • Confirm that each pad tab is fully seated and slides freely in the new hardware.
  • Keep grease, brake fluid, and fingerprints off the friction surfaces.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 29-42 Nm (22-31 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm that the rubber guide-pin boots are seated and not pinched.

Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Replace all four front pads even if one side has more material remaining.
  • If one side is worn much more than the other, inspect for a seized guide pin or sticking caliper before driving.

Step 12: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to lightly snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Optima, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires onto the ground.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Never move your Optima until the pedal is firm and remains at a consistent height.
  • Check the reservoir and adjust the level between MIN and MAX using fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed bottle.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold steady pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should remain firm and should not sink toward the floor.
  • ✅ Inspect both calipers and the area around the brake-fluid reservoir for leaks.
  • ✅ At walking speed in a safe area, make several gentle stops and verify that your Optima stops straight without grinding or pulling.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 30 mph to 5 mph. Allow about 30 seconds between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with very hot brakes.
  • ✅ Drive for several minutes afterward without hard braking to let the brakes cool.
  • ✅ Avoid panic stops and prolonged pedal holding for the first 200 miles when traffic conditions permit.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after 25-50 miles.
