- ๐ Park your Malibu on level pavement, shift into Park, shut off the engine, and apply the parking brake.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks tightly against the front and rear of both rear tires.
- ๐ Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir at the rear of the engine compartment. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- ๐ง Check the fluid level. If it is at the MAX line, use a brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- ๐ฑ No infotainment menu, scan-tool command, coding, or electronic parking-brake procedure is required.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not completely remove the nuts while the tires are on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Position the 2-ton floor jack beneath the reinforced front jacking point shown by the notch or marking along the rocker-panel pinch weld.
- Raise one front corner and place a 2-ton jack stand beneath the adjacent reinforced support area. Repeat on the other side.
- Lower your Malibu gently onto both stands, then push the body lightly to verify it is stable.
- A pinch weld is the reinforced seam below the doors.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Inspect the Brakes
- Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust from the caliper area.
- Inspect the brake hose for cracks, wetness, bulges, or twisting.
- Inspect each rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a pronounced outer lip. Damaged or undersized rotors require replacement or professional measurement.
- Compare the inner and outer pad thickness. A large difference can indicate sticking caliper slide pins.
Step 5: Remove the First Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the rear of the caliper is easier to reach.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket and suspend it with the brake caliper hanger.
- Do not stretch, kink, or twist the brake hose.
- Guide pins let the caliper slide evenly.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use the same screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad hardware clips.
- Note the location of the pad wear indicator before removing the old pads.
- Use brake cleaner and the nylon brake-cleaning brush to clean the hardware seating surfaces.
Step 7: Check the Caliper Guide Pins
- Pull each guide pin gently by hand and confirm it moves smoothly inside its rubber boot.
- Check that both rubber boots are seated and free of tears.
- If a pin is seized, badly corroded, or its boot is damaged, stop and repair the guide-pin assembly before installing the pads.
Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
- Fit the 6-inch C-clamp over the caliper and old pad, then tighten it slowly until the piston is fully seated.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir as the piston moves inward. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or will not retract smoothly.
Step 9: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new front brake pad hardware clips firmly into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the hardware.
- Keep lubricant completely off the rotor and pad friction surfaces.
- Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals. Confirm both pads slide freely without excessive looseness.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 10โ80 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).
- Do not apply threadlocker unless it is supplied on replacement bolts.
Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other front brake assembly using the same listed tools.
- Replace all front pads as one axle set, even if one side appears less worn.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install both wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Malibu slightly, remove the 2-ton jack stands, and lower the vehicle fully.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 50โ150 ft-lb torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to 140 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Seat the Pads Before Moving
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust it to the MAX line only if needed.
- If fluid is required, use only fresh DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap securely.

- ๐ Do not drive your Malibu until the brake pedal feels firm and remains firm under steady pressure.
- ๐ Start the engine and check for warning lights, fluid leaks, unusual noises, or a sinking brake pedal.
- ๐ Test the brakes at walking speed in a clear, traffic-free area before entering normal traffic.
- ๐ก๏ธ Bed in the pads with 8โ10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Avoid stopping completely between applications when safe.
