📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Edge on level ground.
- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir near the driver-side rear of the engine bay.
- Check the brake fluid level. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean turkey baster or fluid syringe before pushing the caliper pistons back.
- The front brakes do not require electronic parking brake service mode. That procedure applies to rear brake service only.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Tip: Loosen only, do not remove yet.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front jacking point to raise the front of your Edge.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before removing the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the brake caliper, brake hose, rotor, and pads before taking anything apart.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- Spray dusty areas lightly with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Guide Pin Bolt
- Use a 15mm wrench to hold the caliper guide pin if it tries to spin.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper guide pin bolt.
- The guide pin is the sliding pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the pads wear.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and outer pad if the caliper is tight.
- Swing the caliper upward away from the brake pads.
- Use a bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension spring or strut area.
- Do not stretch, twist, or pull on the brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Slide the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver if the pads are stuck in the bracket.
- Remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flat-blade screwdriver.
- These clips are also called abutment clips; they help the pads slide smoothly.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket Contact Points
- Use a wire brush to clean the bracket areas where the pad clips sit.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
- Do not get grease or oily residue on the rotor friction surface.
- Tip: Clean sliding surfaces prevent brake noise.
Step 9: Install the New Pad Hardware
- Press the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure each clip sits fully flat in the bracket.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant high-temperature silicone/ceramic to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
- The pad ears are the small tabs on each end of the brake pad backing plate.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Remove excess fluid with a clean syringe if it rises near the top.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the inner pad.
- Compress slowly to avoid pushing fluid back too quickly through the brake system.
Step 11: Install the New Front Brake Pads
- Install the new front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The friction material is the rough pad surface that contacts the rotor.
- Confirm both pads slide easily in the new hardware clips.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper and Install the Bolt
- Remove the bungee cord while supporting the caliper by hand.
- Swing the caliper down over the new pads.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to install the lower caliper guide pin bolt.
- Use a 15mm wrench to hold the guide pin if it spins.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the opposite front wheel.
- Use the same tools and install the remaining pads and hardware from the set.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Do not fully torque the lug nuts while the vehicle is still in the air.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Edge until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs with the 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 220 Nm (162 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
Step 17: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Use shop towels to clean around the brake fluid reservoir cap.
- Check that the fluid level is between MIN and MAX.
- Add DOT 4 brake fluid only if the level is low.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap securely by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Edge and confirm the brake pedal stays firm.
- Check around both front calipers for brake fluid leaks.
- Drive slowly in a safe area and test the brakes at low speed first.
- Bed in the new pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph down to 5 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
- Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
- Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 220 Nm (162 ft-lbs).
